Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

Wouldn’t Arizona be on the hook for some of that? His contract is a little confusing to me. I know there’s dead money in signing bonus paid year 1 (so technically he doesn’t get paid). But isn’t he guaranteed some base salary or roster bonus money from az even if he gets traded?

You don’t need Hopkins to continue the dynasty that is Mahomes.

I wouldn't do it if he wants that much, but we can't fall into the trap of thinking Pat can cover holes everywhere in terms of weapons.

They’re gonna look to DJ Chark, Mecole Hardman+draft if Hopkins and OBJ don’t work out.

At this point I wouldn’t be mad at it.

Probably.

I think next years WR draft is alot better than this one, so unless one they really like is there I woudn't go out of my way on it.

Cards don't have to pay him anyting else once traded...they just have to STILL count the Bonus's they spread out from that large lump sum they gave him at signing. So nothing goes into his pocket

He got a pretty good signing bonus when he signed his current contract. That Bonus was paid to Hopkins in a lump sum and the Cards are able to spread that bonus out over the life of the contract.

2023: $19.45M(Base salary and the most a trading team would pay him), $10.538(Prorated Bonus)...So you add them together and thats why the Cards have a $29.988M Cap hit this year.

The Cards will have $21M in dead money and only a $8.9M cap savings trading him because in 2024 his contract has another prorated bonus of $10,538M that no matter what the Cards at some point have to count as cap.

Man the Cardinals backed themselves into a corner.

As for Hopkins - he can shove that new contract demand. The guy's made $55 million over the last 3 years and he's out there looking for additional guarantees into his 30s?

Yeah, GTFO here with that. He agreed to take these bonuses knowing full well it would eventually hamstring the Cardinals but put cash in his pocket now in exchange for not having increased salaries later. IF (big if) these rumors are true, this is a pretty obvious double dip sort of scenario he's chasing.

And even if he temporarily rescinds those demands - this ain't his first rodeo. He's been a lot like Diggs and Rogers in that he's simply never happy and he's pretty content becoming toxic if things aren't exactly as he wants them to be.

Now if they are just rumors and/or an effort to stay the hell out of NE, that's different. But these guys that are ALWAYS needing their deals re-done are nothing but trouble over any meaningful timeline.

We haven't been linked to Chark in 2 offseasons, dude is already taking tours. I don't think there's anything there yet.

Thanks. I totally missed the line where they have about $4m per year in restructured bonus on top of his signing bonus. You’re right the cards basically don’t pay him this year if they get rid of him. It’s mostly dead cap

There are also a handful of really nice interior DL players that might get pushed down due to positional value.

I don't buy this 'weak draft' shit at all.
It's not a good draft at the very top. There's usually about 20 sure-fire first rounders in any class, in my experience. This year, it looks like it's about 10, which is extremely bad.

But since we're not starting until pick 31, it plays right into our hand. 10-60 in this draft are all kind of packed together with similar talent across multiple positions, including Edge, WR, and OT like you said.

Overall, this isn't a top-heavy draft. That's not unusual. But it really doesn't affect the Chiefs draft board at all other than some guys may fall that we really don't expect.

According to Hopkins representatives, they aren't looking at bank-breaking money. I don't think there's anything to the rumors that he wants well over $25M AAV.

Yeah, it's really why I wouldn't view it as a long term kind of thing. If you could get him here for a couple years, maybe get him to add a year then move him for some picks, could work well.

Just repeating what Nate Taylor said on the pod.
The longer this lingers the more likely I think it is that Hardman comes back for a year.

He needs to rehab his body and his value. Better to stay at a place you know then try to go somewhere else later on
