2019 Free agency Thread

We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

And yes, when you've been injured as much as Ford has, injuries ARE statistics. They're actually the main statistic. The most important ability for an NFL player is "availability".
He led the league in pressures IIRC and was up there in forced fumbles. Paired with 13 sacks, yeah, I'm pretty sure that's elite.

Its hard as hell to find a guy that can consistently even get 8 sacks. Z'Darius Smith is going to be a free agent I'd guess and he'll probably get paid a shit ton.

It's just such a premium position, you've got to almost roll the dice on Ford because he's that good if he's healthy.

Nobody you sign will equal that because you'll be spreading them out over 3 or 4 years.
Sure, but there in again you run the risk of having issues down the road. With Ford, you are only one year committed.

I would just prefer taking my chances with Ford than singing one of the free agent pass ruhsers to an oversized contract that could be an issue going down the road.

The biggest issue is that last couple drafts defensively. Kpass and Speaks were supposed to make it so you could walk away from these big money guys.

One place they could get creative though would be flipping a later round pick or something for a pass rusher or two that's fallen out of favor elsewhere due to scheme change etc.

Can they really afford to waste another year of Mahomes' rookie contract? Seems like we have conflicting views here. People are worried about "down the road". There is no "down the road" when the team is so close to a Super Bowl NOW.

If they cut Houston and keep Ford, they're banking on Ford getting them to a Super Bowl. He can't do that from the bench.

Basically you're flipping a coin on 2019. And then doing the whole run of crap over again next offseason.

If keeping Ford is a coin flip, that’s still a better chance than getting rid of him and Houston both. So keep him.

If you let all 3 of those guys walk, you're flipping a coin as well.

They're really in a funky spot.

I'm just not sure how you're so sure Ford is going to miss long stretches. Even if he misses a game or two, you're ok.

Or just keep Houston, who's a better overall player and outside one catastrophic (and somewhat mishandled) injury, and a much more reliable player too.

13 sacks and top 3 in pressures and forced fumbles is elite.

What in his history suggests he won't miss at least a handful of games?

Do you think the human body gets stronger the older it gets and the more abuse it takes?

How many injuries does a guy have to have before people realize his body is flawed somehow?

Ford was getting the attention from opposing OCs, not Houston.

So he was elite one year. Pretty good in one other.

And non-existent in the other 3.

And when you add in college, it gets even better.

Dee Ford was indeed elite this past year.

There is a reason the guy would get a 5-year 80+$M on the open market.
