*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

I think my new regiment is going to be rowing machine in the morning and treadmill at night, on the weekdays anyway. Nice long nature walks in the weekend are great, but consume time like crazy.

Hit the rowing machine for the first time in forever, after walking/treadmilling quite a bit for the last 3-4 weeks. Rowing machine kicked my ass. Definitely better for upper body though. Better than just some 'heavy hands' on the treadmill, most obviously.

Hitting the part of beginning to workout where you are actually gaining weight, rather than shedding it. Started at about 190 and I'm up to 195 or so, which is not my intention. My intention is to be leaner and lose some of my proto-beer-belly.

Anyone in here doing any bodybuilding type training, or is everyone pretty much trying to lean out or on a beginner strength routine?

I'm in bulk mode doing Intermediate Madcow 5x5. Started week 2 today.

side note: Back on the creatine as of a week ago also. Creatine does help but to my understanding it takes a couple weeks to kick in at 5 g /day.

Madcow 5x5 is OK if your just trying to increase your bench, squat, dead lift and press, but leaves out a lot of accessory. If your after a bit more size than raw strength, check out Lyle McDonals generic bulking routine, or layne nortons phat routine if you have 5 days to train. My younger cousin has been on his routine for the last 5 months and has put some good size and strength on.

Dont forget to eat.

Hey man, I'm curious about the coffee in the dog days of summer. When you drink coffee does the heat bother you worse?

It absolutely does me, but I hate heat to start with.

All I want to know is if there is a way to deal with the heat better.

Cold brew your coffee. Google it.

That actually sounds really good. Although I'm not sure I like coffee enough to justify the trouble. I'm more Interested in handling the heat better.

I usually wake up freezing, because our house is kept pretty cold. It doesn't really bother me, though. The only time I'll drink it outside is after about 7 pm, when it's not 100 degrees anymore.

Yes, I start sweating, but I'm usually going to play soccer later, anyway, so I don't mind.
