Spider-Man: No Way Home

I saw this before the game today (blew off work a bit early). I enjoyed it, particularly the 2nd half of the movie after the death scene. Probably better than the previous one of these but not better than the first Holland Spider-Man, at least for me.

Interestingly it seems to me they’ve also left it in a place where Sony can effectively start the series over again and cut all ties with the MCU if they choose to. Don’t think that would be in Sony’s best interest, but I suspect that was intentional.

To be fair, Sony's greed to try and keep up with the MCU pulled the plug on a third movie for Garfield, a movie he should've gotten. Now in hindsight that paved the way for the agreement for Sony and Marvel to bring Tom Holland's Spiderman to the big screen, but I wouldn't mind them giving Andrew Garfield another movie, while Sally Fields is still able to portray Aunt May. They could introduce Shaelene Woodley like they wanted to as Mary Jane Watson, after the events of Gwen's death, to give him something to hope for and have in his life, while also bringing back Dane Dehaan and giving Green Goblin the space to breath that he didn't get in the last ten minutes of The Amazing Spiderman 2. I always liked Garfield as Spiderman, he didn't look the part of your traditional Peter Parker, but I think his passion for the project and role were greater than that of Maguire or Holland, and he encapsulated the charm, wit and humor of Spiderman better than the other two as well imo. I'm looking forward to Garfield's interviews after he's allowed to come out in public and say he is in No Way Home after denying his involvement for what seemed like a good 6 months to a year in every interview he did for Tick Tick Boom and other projects.

I don't think Garfield did a very good job in his denials. Just by his tongue in cheek, I figured he WAS in along with Maguire!

Doc Ock and Goblin were perfect. Electro was pretty odd at times but I guess they half-ass explained his boost in confidence when they introduced him. Sandman and Lizard were nothing but plot filler. Sandman in particular just did things the plot needed instead of what made sense for his character.

I think it’s hard to compare Garfield to the other 2 given Sony’s meddling. In a vacuum, I don’t think any actor is bad in ASM 1 or 2, but the actors should’ve been playing college-aged characters as opposed to HS.

Additionally, Sony tried forcing too much shit.

I think Garfield probably is the most passionate about SM, but he doesn’t seem like SM to me or Peter Parker.

The Raimi trilogy will always be my favorite regardless of what happens because of SM2 and Harry’s arc.

Saw this last night. Should have been titled Spider Man: The Retcon.

I see people saying that this is basically the "Endgame" of Spider Man films, but it's closer to "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in how that film cleaned up the shitpile that was X-3 The Last Stand, No Way Home essentially takes this entire, for lack of a better term, "Iron Man Jr" era of films and just very neatly places them into the garbage.

It was a really great spectacle, and certainly the most entertaining retcon that I've seen, but this story for better or worse acknowledges the rumblings throughout the fanbase that this iteration of Spider Man just was not being done right as by the end of the film, everyone has forgotten that Peter ever existed, even Dr Strange himself.

Pete abandons his friends to their new lives where he will no longer endanger them, he has no access to any Stark Tech, and he creates the classic red and blue suit on his sewing machine in his new apartment before strutting it in the films final swing sequence.

So this sets up a do over of sorts with the next Holland films. With my main gripe essentially being retconned, I am interested to see where they go from here with it.

In a way it feels like "One more day" without the payoff of saving May's life. He loses his relationship with MJ, but also anyone who knew he ever existed in exchange for his secret identity having never been disclosed, and May remains dead. An odd choice, considering that One More Day is reviled by many fans almost as much as the Clone Saga. But for a Hollywood film, it's kind of the only way you can go such a different direction.

A good ol fashioned forget spell.

I'm not sure why we retconned the deaths of Electro, Norman Osborn, and Otto Octavius though. It's not like Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina are going to be popping back up in future films due to their age, and Electro just isn't very interesting.

They should have retconned that dumbass idea that Flint Marko was the one that killed Ben in Raimi's universe. They actually rehashed that ****ing bullshit. Saying once again, hey. It wouldn't matter if you stopped Carradine. Your uncle would still be dead. I ****ing HATE that change to Spidermans origins.

The whole idea is supposed to hit you like a truck. My God. If he had just stopped that man like he should have, Ben would be alive.

Hated it in SM3, hate it more now.

Loved Dafoe's performance, and makes me even more sad that he spent most of the original film under that stupid ass helmet. His ability to play two characters with the same face, and be so wildly different is just awesome. His conversation with the Goblin in the mirror in the original film is one of my all time favorite scenes. He pulls off making Norman a tragic character extremely well.

In the end it was a fun movie having the other Spider Men come and assist. While I'm interested to see what's next, after this one ended I couldn't help but feel these first 3 movies were just a big waste of time. Like, it took 3 films to get where you should have started.

But hey, it's gonna make a metric shit ton of money so no harm no foul.

As an aside for anyone who saw this.

When did the spell to make people forget Peter Parker was Spiderman, suddenly turn into make everyone forget Peter Parker ever existed?

Not sure when that change got made, and it didn't really make a lot of sense that his best friends now not only don't know he's Spider Man, they don't know who he is at all.

I am sure later on strange and few others remember. Did we say if uncle Ben was ever dead in this universe? I don't remember.

I am sure we will see new versions of some characters if we get more independent spiderman movies. The symbiote is now in the universe.

So thankfully no tom hardy venom in the MCU. His movies are horrible with him as venom.

Does Peter go to college? The classic parker with no tech should be fun. Does he meet new harry Osborn in college?

I would like to see next film peter in college, kraven kicking his ass on orders of the kingpin. Symbiote finds him and then wears black suit whole film. Then knocks the shit out of kraven. End credits. New goblin.

The only problem will be tough for the fans. They are used to spiderman having all the extra powerful stories from avengers and past movies. It will be hard to keep that momentum going.
