The Last Great Pre-Draft Thread On Tannehill

Tell me, just tell me, you see a first round pick here:

Because I don't.

What I like:
  • Athleticism is through the roof.
  • Seems to make progressions, but I'll need more tape on that front.
  • Is extremely good at hitting that corner just beyond the CB before the safety closes in.
  • Fantastic on rollouts.
  • Very strong arm.
  • Keeps eyes downfield when he feels pressure.
  • Pretty good pocket presence when the pocket holds.
  • Not afraid to throw into windows.
What I don't like:
  • Occasional WTF throws.
  • His tape is the worst towards the end -- with the game on the line. I do not see a clutch QB.
  • Virtually zero snaps under center.
  • Great arm, but doesn't attack deep, nor do his passes look remotely accurate deep.
  • I don't like the gameplan for him; I know this is out of his control. But they roll him out constantly and they give him run plays.
  • Release may be too low -- tipped balls from time to time.
  • Occasionally telegraphs throws.

Maybe its because all of your knocks on him are coachable. You are drafting players for who they can become in the nfl. Tannehill has the physical characteristics and intangibles -the noncoachable stuff_ to be a franchise qb. Coach him up, give him a year withe the clipboard and profit. Or trade down with philly and pick up a second.

Folds like a card table in the 4th quarter.

I see a QB that's still relatively inexperienced, dealt with the most drops in NCAA and a shitty offensive minded coach. There's still a lot of upside though.

Lots of drops by Tannehill's receiver here. I think his tape is better.

No question he has a bunch of upside, but again, two major problems here:

1. Can't make deep throws. Just can't do it. I didn't see a single accurate one.

2. He did log a TD late in the game with another opportunity to score, but that last opportunity? Choke -- poorly thrown ball, or a miscommunication with the receiver. Not to mention the atrocious third quarter and part of the fourth quarter before he finally turned it on.

Luck, RG3, Weeden... clutch QBs. But I don't see a clutch QB in Tannehill, still.

Tannehill was absolute nails in the lsu game. He kept them in that game despite 7 or so drops, some at critical junctures. I don't think I take tannehill if I'm the chiefs because I just don't have enough tape. Especially if I can trade down with philly and pick up a first next year. That is due to two factors: I draft Wilson in the mid rounds this year and make a move for a first round qb next year if I don't like what I see in wilson.

Tannehill and Cassel share some of the same "knocks."

Apparently, we can't "coach up" the QB we have - what makes you think we can correct Tannehill's issues?

Add to it that he's only got 9" hands. That is ridiculously small for a QB. Probably affects his delivery, which in turn affects the receivers ability to catch the ball. Might be a reason why A&M leads the nation in dropped balls.

It certainly won't help him at the next level.

And he's got happy feet. Doesn't throw with a solid foundation and tends to have his body moving in two different directions.

He's a major project that won't be ready for at least three years.

No thanks.

Maybe Tannehill is actually coachable? Maybe because Tannehill is 23 instead of 31? Maybe because Tannehill's upside is far greater than Cassel's? Maybe because Tannehill doesn't shit his pants every time he sees a pass rush? Tannehill is superior to Cassel in so many ways its hilarious that you would even draw such a comparison. Plus, player comparisons are ****ing stupid.

Tannehill this year or Landry Jones next year. Let's face it, Pioli isn't moving up to grab someone so KC has to get used to the scraps that fall.
