It's called "respect".

You don't win at anything without respecting the fact that any opponent, at any time, can get the best of you.

It's not paranoid, it's prudent.

And it doesn't turn anybody into anything. It's an internal thought process for Andy, or any other coach, and has no effect at all on the opponent.

You don't want to give the Jets players any reason to get motivated for this game. You also don't want your own guys feeling like they can walk through the game, kind of like the way they have acted a couple times this year.

Exactly! It's coachspeak but it does have a purpose.

So you have to admit it would really be funny if Andy came out and said " I really ,really look forward to playing the Jets. They're 0-7 and for good reason. Their coaching isn't the best, but they have good players. Well, they did until one went to Seattle and we got the other."

Tough spot. Hard to sound sincere but I do think Andy respects every opponent, even ones that are falling over.

And you hope it pays off by Gase and Gregg Williams not blitzing and hitting people late in the game when the Chiefs are just running the clock out. Andy won't be an idiot like Vic Fangio in that situation, so you hope the Jets follow his example and the game plays out in a gentlemanly manner.

I understand that Andy is being harder on the team this week than other weeks. Good. I hate to see this be the reverse of 2012 when 1 of our 2 wins came against the previously undefeated Packers.

Similarly, I love this quote from Chris Jones. Kind of sums things up:
