Summoning all back pain sufferers to this thread!

Quick background before the bad back problem:

-I'm 55 1/4 years old
-Lost 85 pounds in the last 18 months and only 15-20 pound away from recommended weight. Did it through exercise at gym and good diet.
-I'm muscular and active at the gym and golf
-Very few medical issues; two detached retinas, one in each eye. Operations on both eyes, right 14 and left 16 years ago
-No stitches in my life
-No real issues for the most part with any major health issues or any broken bones except fracture of my hand when I got into a fight in high school and punched a kid about 20 times in the head

Back issue:

Over the last 18-24 months I began having some MINOR discomfort and morning pain in my left hip. It went away after warming up and walking around, never preventing me from any activity or event.

Fast forward to the last 2-3 weeks.
-Suddenly I begin having this sporadic shocking pain that lasts a few seconds just above my left hip then lessens. Didn't think much of it as I am aging and just think it's a muscle strain. Over the last two weeks it has become so severe so quickly that if I move or position myself in a bad way it's like someone is sticking a cattle prod in my lower back and I buckle. I nearly have tears in my eyes and the pain is substantial, just below my Pancreatitis and Gout, the two worst and most painful things I've ever had.

My fear is that with my bad posture over the last 20-25 years working at a desk on a computer along with my recent overly aggressive gym workouts and golf, I have screwed up my back really bad.

I know the Sciatic and a herniated disc can be really painful.

I'm hoping someone can share some insight who has suffered from a bad back that is not the result of an accident or work injury.

Thanks in advance and while I typed this I moved he wrong way and was shocked with the pain!

Balanced Core muscle strengthening
Stretching, especially the hips
Good back brace(Wearing a back brace while sleeping is surprisingly effective)

Back brace something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Su...30&sr=8-3&th=1

Stretching is great but see a chiro who has a massage therapist first. A doctor will urge surgery too quickly.

Yep! I forgot about the drugs. These days, doctors prescribe pain killers too quickly without really addressing the cause first.

I have ruptured 3 disk, I think L2, L3 and L4. I have 4 vertebrae in the center of my back that is fused and 7 disk total that are degenerated . I have tons of back pain, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and even kidney pain because of the nerves come off your sprine that wrap around your kidney. I have tried chiropractic's with no luck. I have had some of the nerves burned out with no luck. Injections with no luck. Neurosurgeon says my only hope is to run rods up my spine and tie the vertebrae into the rods. will be down nearly a year. I asked dock what percentage of chance he would give me, and he said about 50% chance it would help. I am afraid of taking the plunge, because you cant reverse that shit.

One thing I can tell you that helps me, quite a bit. Now this wont fix a joint, or remake a disk, but it can give you some relief . When you start having joint problems, you will also have muscle problems. Your muscle will tense up and actually hold the lactic acid and not release it. you end up with a hard, knotted up muscle that's pulling your vertebrae together and probably pinching the nerves worse. DRY NEEDLE Therapy is what I am getting at. It looks like acupuncture , but in dry needle, they don't just barely pierce the skin, that actually stick the needle through 5 layers of muscle right up to your spine. They put 20 needles in my then hook electricity to those needles. It has done more for me than anything. In my state, only physical therapist can perform the dry needle , but in other states they have different laws . It doesn't hurt and everyone I encounter at the clinic, loves dry needle. My therapist said that 94-96% of her patients have favorable views of what dry needle has done for them.

You might research the dry needle and try it. If it made your problems " livable with" for a year or two, it would be an advantage of not taking the plunge for surgery and plus, a couple years from now the surgeries will be more advanced.

I don't have back pain unless I exercise a lot, then it just slowly builds and builds until I have to back off.

Yesterday I stopped at the chiropractor office here on the first floor of our commercial building to see about an appointment for an evaluation. Sadly they are just the corporate office for all their clinics in the US and have no services here. Just my luck !

I'm 68 and about 3 years ago I started to get lower back pain, I had a cat-scan and they said I had a degenerative L1 - L5. My doctor sent me to a pain mgmt doctor who prescribed PT. I had been going to the gym 5 days a week, so the PT they gave me was a joke, I did so much more on my own I quit after 3 sessions.

About a year ago the pain got so bad I couldn't walk more than 5 minutes at the mall or a store without looking for a bench to sit. My doctor said I was a good candidate for fusion surgery, I said let me try a chiropractor.

I got a chiroprator that specialized in back pain treatment. He looked at my cat-scan and said, see how your L-1 through L-5 are so close together, the cartilage is almost gone. It was a 10 week program for $3,000 and we'll be working to pull those vertebrate apart. I started going M-W-F, after 3 weeks I noticed absolutely no improvement, so I dropped out. I asked the chiropractor if an inversion table might be of help, he said, absolutely Not.

I decided to see for myself. You can buy tables new for as little as $100 on eBay, but I figured I would get a name brand such a Teeter. It was right before Christmas and Dick's had a sale on a $450 Teeter for $250. So I picked it up and began using it for 5 to 10 minutes a day. I gradually increased the inversion from my head just below level to now it not quite totally inverted, but close.

By the end of January, about six weeks after I started my back pain was totally gone. It was the greatest thing I've ever seen. I would suggest to those who can't find help with PT or chiropractor, to give this a try. I have this one here. I see Dick's has it on sale again.

That's the unit I just got. LOVE IT!!! Wow!

Too many years of carrying SCUBA tanks with weights I suppose, but it could be other things like age catching up to me too. All I know is, no matter how it started, this thing is friggin awesome!

Started doing the full inversion deal today and, yeah, it's da' bomb.... I tried five minutes this morning and what a difference "5 minutes" can make.
