It's just been that way forever. I've heard many ex-player talk about it. It's much more draining to play defense than it is to play offense. Only guys running fly routes tend to get worn out as much as defenders.
Sure it is - but my point is that I don't think it's any easier to defend the pass than it is to defend the run. I mean I guess a great running team that can just do a 13 play drive for 75 yards and score would tire a team out more than a great passing team that covers that 75 yards in 5 plays.

But those are sort of logical extremes. For most football teams, I can't see running the football to be an obviously easier way to tire out a defense than passing. And I've NEVER heard defenses routinely talk about how gassed they are by the end of the game like they're doing against this freakshow that Reid has put together...

I’d guess it’s more a number of snaps that’s the issue. A running team (or an Alex Smith led team) will take longer to punch it in that an air it out squad.

Presuming they punch it in at all, though. Look at the average yards/play - passing the ball is just a damn sight more likely to keep the chains moving.

It doesn't work that way. Practice is no comparison to a real game. If they don't play this week you may as well sit them through the bye. Oh, and we very likely need Houston in a big way to stop Gurley next week.

At some point if you sit enough players because "this is a bye week", the guys you DON'T sit are gonna believe it. And they're gonna roll the ball out on the field expecting to win.

And in the 4th quarter they're in the middle of a dogfight that never should have been when suddenly one bad break could end up costing you a bye week or HFA.

That's not an attitude you can have across the board. Sure, with some guys you can go ahead and find an excuse, but when you have 5 guys that could play that you end up sitting, you send a pretty shitty message to the guys you don't and it can bite you in the ass.
