So the wording of that article is...interesting...

They may have to keep him because of his contract.

Then it says "the 49ers can’t cut Ford until he can pass a physical".

In the source article, they talk more about the contract but later in this article, they explicitly mention the injury guarantee but not in the above sentence.

So is it because of his contract that he must pass a physical? The articles don't say that.

Or is it because the team can't cut somebody that isn't healthy (the same thing we're arguing about with Fisher)?

i read it as he has to be able to pass a physical, before the 9ers can cut him.

so essentially, he has to be "healthy" for them to be able to cut him.

Him and Sammy Watkins should do an infomercial "how to get paid full-time money, for part-time work"

Under what construct, his contract or the league's?

That's what isn't clear.

They said his contract will make it hard. Then said he can't be cut until cleared. And THEN said "his contract" is guaranteed.

So the first sentence seems to imply that it is the cause of the 2nd sentence. But the 3rd sentence explicitly mentions the contract while the 2nd sentence doesn't, so again, it's worded poorly.

They’ll try to do an injury settlement, but usually when players take those it’s bc they have the leverage and the team pays quite a bit more in the settlement for them to go.

So basically SF is ****ed either way

Right.

People are saying the Chiefs can cut Fisher without a settlement. I don't think they can. (Well I mean they can, and then there's likely be a battle with Fisher about money and medical care).

His contract. Because of his injury guarantee. They can cut him but if he can't pass the physical they'd still owe him 11+ mil this season. And if he's still on the roster by April 1, the whole next year guarantees. So if he doesn't pass the physical by April 1, the 49ers will be on the hook for the majority of his contract next year anyway and may just keep him. They would still save some cap space but not much.

It’s specifically in Ford’s contract. He has an $11.6 million injury guarantee.

His injury guarantee vests in April. That 11.6 million is from the 2021 regular season, it comes forward as a guarantee.

Quote:
The 49ers can’t cut Ford until he can pass a physical, and General Manager John Lynch has acknowledged that Ford may not be healthy for the start of the 2021 season. As noted by Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com, Ford has an injury guarantee that means $11.6 million of his base salary becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still on the 49ers’ roster on April 1.
2020 is over. This is about 2021.

Yeah, the article explicitly stats that the injury guarantee converts $11.6M of his 2021 base salary to guaranteed money if he's still on the roster in April.

It doesn't explicitly say that his contract prevents him from being cut, though. I mean yeah, it could be read that way but damn, they could have made it a whole lot more clear too.

I finally found something, although it isn't perfect either.

It appears the team is on the hook for payout (not the contract) if they cut a player that can't pass a physical.

Which means absent an injury settlement where both sides agree, teams CAN cut injured players, they just have to pay them a predetermined amount.

https://www.monstersandcritics.com/s...an-in-the-nfl/

Quote:
What does it mean when a player is released with failed physical designation?

When a player is released with a failed physical designation it simply means that the team has terminated the contract of the player on the injured reserve (IR) list because the team has decided that he can no longer play for them because of the injury.

When a vested veteran (more than four years of service) is released by his team, the player is free and can sign with any other club. However, when a player released with a failed physical designation is unable to play again due to the injury, the team will have to pay a league-mandated injury protection payout.
