2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

He probably won't be as good as we think he will, that is just how these things turn out for us Royals fans.

Not only is Gordon batting 3rd tonight, but Yost said that he plans on it being a long-term move for him. If Alex starts to slump because of this I will go crazy.

Sure he has games where he pitches really good which drives down his numbers, but he has too many stinkers to be considered a great pitcher.

So looking at starts over the course of this season, in 25 starts Hernandez has given up 4 runs or more 8 times. That is 32% of his starts that are not quality starts. As a comparison here is a list of some of the other top AL pitchers.

Weaver - 3 times in 21 starts for 14%
Verlander - 7 times in 24 starts for 29%
Price - 3 times in 23 starts for 13%
Sale - 3 times in 21 starts for 14%
Harrison - 6 times in 23 starts for 26%
Peavey - 5 times in 23 starts for 22%
Kuroda - 6 times in 24 starts for 25%

All of these pitchers are more consistent than Hernandez in giving you quality starts and keeping the team in a good position to win. There could be more but you get the idea.

I also want to be clear I am not trying to knock the guy or diminish how good he is, I am just trying to say he is not the end all be all for pitchers.
I would be interested in seeing a year-to-year comparison. Felix is far more consistent over his career, just eyeballing it, than any of these pitchers you mention except verlander, who's probably fairly close. But felix is so technically sound that he will pitch well into his late thirties, imo. I'm on my phone so I can't do the research right now. Ill check it out when I get home.

Regarding the long career I would be fearful that he has just pitched too much already. The Mariners are running him into the ground. Averages 230 innings a year.

Why would you mess with Gordon at this point? Guy has an .845 leading off this year and .915 last year. They tried moving him to the middle early this year and he sucked horribly. Small sample size, absolutely. But why fix what isn't broken?

Here's a better idea. Fix Hosmer.

Good. Escobar needs to lead off. Been saying that all season.

If Gordon can't hit in the 3rd spot, then you need to trade his ass for more starting pitching.

Personally I think he should be hitting in the #2 spot.

My ideal lineup...

1-Escobar
2-Gordon
3-Moose
4-Butler
5-Hosmer
6-Myers
7-Perez
8-Cain
9-Getz

The more I think about this the more it pisses me off. The offense has been pretty dang good lately. Why mess with it Yost?!!!!!!!

Como is out to prove how reeruned he is today. Escobars approach does not lend itself to leading off at all.

GTFO. Why don't you want your best on base guy in the leadoff spot? Escobar does not do enough of the things a leadoff hitter needs to do, such as see pitches and take lots of walks.

The Royals continuing to show why they are futile.

Why don't they just make Francouer the leadoff guy it makes as much sense.

Don't expect too much of an educated response from como about this. Last time he tried to talk about it, sveral posters wiped the floor with him. Instead of admitting how wrong he is, he will just scamper back off to candyland where he eats some paint chips and plays with his poo.

It's very simple. Gordon's OBP when he's led off the last two years is .380. Escobar, in his career year this season, has an OBP of .340.

Gordon leads off, Esky bats second. It's elementary, but f it, let's just change it for the hell of it. By all means, Dyson needs more at bats.
