Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Of course he's going to say that. Why would he question Reid after the fact?!

And it is true he wasn't fully ready Game 1 2017 season. No rookie is.

Who was the last unsuccessful QB who sat at least a full rookie year?

It was also reported that Mahomes looked better than Alex fairly quickly. So the fact that Mahomes didn't take over had nothing to do with his talent or readiness to play.

My belief is Mahomes probably needed 4-6 games to master enough of the offense to be comfortable starting.

How about Eric Fisher? He started at RT because that was his job. Do we really lose anything if it’s Donald Stephenson there instead? And do you think a year of Fisher playing on the wrong side and getting his confidence blown to shit was all that impactful for his future career?

I mean yeah, he was a first rounder and he started, but…

No. It's because the Chiefs coaching staff has a plan for every single player. They had a plan for Mahomes and stuck to it. They had a plan for Rice and stuck to it. They have a plan for FAU and stuck to it. They draft players with a clear plan in mind for development and a long view for the player in the franchise. Why does veach target young players in the draft? So he can take a long view and consider second contracts for those players responsible rather than end up in the in between like with Sneed. With FAU, they needed him to put on twenty pounds. That doesn't happen without red shirting, and certainly not on the abbreviated off season rookies get.

What would be a large enough sample size for you?

I have no idea why teams do that. Look at Zach Wilson and Jordan Love. Both guys were raw as hell but had really high ceilings bc they were mobile players with really strong arms that could make off platform throws the way Mahomes does regularly.

One sat and learned behind a veteran QB with absolutely no pressure. The other was the “savior” in NYC Ana thrown out there immediately in bad conditions.

People forget that Jordan Love looked horrible when he first started. Spags blitzed him relentlessly when we played him and he looked like a deer in the headlights. But GB put him in the film room and taught him to read defenses and now he looks like a top 10 QB.

Teams need to learn the Packer way. Andy sure did with Mahomes.

I think it's a pretty big assumption to assume this means anything negative about FAU. They clearly always had a plan for that inside/outside role in combination with FAU.
The difference is that they signed Omenihu for 2 years so as FAU is coming on strong, Omenihu would be on his way out and Danna theoretically would be out. Signing Danna for 3 this year signifies something different to me. We'll see how it goes with snap counts for FAU.

The Danna deal looks more like a 2 year deal. Just a year more than Omeniihu's.

I think you're overthinking it.

Why do you expect a rookie 1st rounder to start especially on a team that is coming off a Superbowl win? Seems dumb to me that Superbowl or playoff team will require a rookie to be who is not even top 22 in his draft class to be a top 22 player on the team drafting him.

Especially when the Chiefs are going to constantly be picking late in the first round where you’re very unlikely to have a blue chip player available without a trade up. Most drafts picking late in the first gets you upper 2nd round talent.

Sure but even if he didn't start I don't think expecting him to play more than 20% of plays especially with Omenihu missing 6 games is that big of an expectation.

And being active in the playoffs is pretty much minimum level expectations.
