Take care of yourself guys

In the last year I have had 6 friends die. 4 in their 50s, one in his late 40s and one in his early 60s. All appeared to be in great shape. Makes you think a little about your own mortality. Wish I had retired a couple years back when I had the chance. Seems so young to be kicking it. Still others have had major health issues and cannot enjoy any quality of life. What ever happened to the new 50 is the old 40?

I was in great shape up until 34 or so. At 59 I lost 100 lbs. So 25 years of being fat. No diabetics. No known heart issues. Regular blood work. Trips to the Dr. Always had good health insurance. Started to have high blood pressure 10 years ago. Take a pill. 120/80 every time.

I know from my personal experience and in the health care field, nothing is settled. Everyone can improve their quality of life at any age. You made bad decisions. Stop making them and make better ones. Even those I worked with who tried to improve their quality of life after COPD diagnosis were able to improve their quality of life.

Still no blue moons?

Your body is the most important piece of property you own. That’s how I think about it as I get older. I just want to be able to enjoy my retirement, not drop dead right after I retire. (Like a lot of people I know)

Sorry for your loss. I lost my brother 4 years ago to Brain Cancer, Gioblastoma. Sucks to lose a sibling.

That's not a Weizen. That's the original Hofbrau lager.

I know that. It was a beer metaphor.

I take it you have a Hofbräuhaus of America location near you? I'm jealous. I've actually been to the original in Munich but the closest location to me here is in Chicago.

Nothing better than a 2-liter lager and a huge Bavarian pretzel.

It's not as simple as your LDL being borderline or slightly high. The LDL numbers can be further broken down by actual particle size. THAT is actually more important. I can't recall the test I had, but it broke it down that way from how I understood it.

You also need to understand your LDL / HDL differential. Even a moderate LDL level in the absence of a good HDL level (happens with people that lack good food sources like fish and nuts) can be a big problem because HDL effectively "cleans" LDL from the system.

I know people that aren't even close to having high LDL that are considered "at risk" because their HDL levels are simply too low.

Sort of.

The main protein embedded in LDL-C and VLDL is apolipoprotein B which is a stronger predictor of atherogenicity than LDL-C alone, but it is not yet a common test. LDL-C+ VLDL is called your non-HDL-C, and is a good estimate of atherogenecity. Lipoprotein A is also risk-enhancer, but not to the extent of apoB.

The general principle to follow is that lower is better for LDL-C, and every 1% reduction in your LDL gives an approximately 1% risk reduction for an ASCVD event, although the risk reduction lowers off as LDL-C decreases.

The newest lipid guidelines recommend using coronary artery calcium scores as supplemental info for the necessity of statin therapy, but that's still pretty cutting edge.

For me it is less about reaching an age and more about the quality of the breaths I have no matter how many of them there are. I do believe for most people though how they take care of themselves makes a huge difference. Looking back at my classmates those who made health a priority look much younger. Those who didn't were generally fat and looked older. Those who abused themselves with cigarettes and alcohol or both looked a lot older like by 15 years. Anyone who messed with amphetamines is basically history.
