LNBS: Will KC draft a QB earlier than we think?

Andy had McNabb and drafted:

Kevin Kolb in the 2nd round.
AJ Feeley in the 5th.
Kafka in the 4th.
Nick Foles in the 3rd.

I wonder if Veach and Andy will use a mid rounder on a QB in the next couple drafts.

I wouldn’t hate it at a max of a 4th round investment if the right guy falls, but I sure would be pissed if we used a 2 or 3 on one.

Gabbert is here largely because henne recommended him. Let’s just bring in a veteran that’s best suited to fill in for a game or 2 for the hopefully never emergency we need someone to chip in. Let’s just start there and we don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Gabbert is a horrible backup because his style is so much of a mismatch to an offensive scheme built around Mahomes. He would be a decent enough backup for a pocket passer statue like Brady or Big Ben but not for us.

At the right price I see value in someone like Tyler Huntley.

In all seriousness, KC absolutely should have a backup that could come in say if Mahomes beaks his collarbone in the middle of the season.

Or if he has to sit out a drive during a playoff game while getting checked/cleared/x-rayed for medical reasons.

Now whether that is best done by FA vets or a draft pick is a different question.

No!

I'll gladly take a top 10 top instead. This team with Mahomes is built to win Super Bowls. We are so past playoff appearances.

Backups like Gabbert can hold you over for a short term absence. That's all we need.

Depth at LB and defensive line with potential free agency defections.

RB depth.

TE depth.

Veach has proven he can hit on instant impact players in any round of the draft… to waste a draft pick on a QB who realistically is going to be nothing more than a practice squad player next season, is not the best use of draft capital.

Huntley would be good, but you think Baltimore is willing to let him walk?

I believe Tyrod Taylor will be available next year.

Likely not as Jackson has more of an injury history to merit needing a backup in the system and Huntley is a good fit with the way Baltimore are built to play.

Tannehill is another veteran option if he isn’t willing to stay with the Titans as backup and maybe wants a ring even just as a squad player

Drafting a QB before round 7 would be monumentally stupid.

We have other more pressing needs, but I wouldn't mind an upgrade on a backup QB. If Blain Gabbert ever had to step in for more than a couple of weeks, we would be screwed. Hopefully there will be a decent UFA available.
