Men charged with Thompson TV burglary suspected in second wide-screen theft

By: Stephen J. Lee, Grand Forks Herald

The two men charged Thursday with burglary in Grand Forks for trying to take a television from a rural Thompson, N.D., home Wednesday also are suspects in a TV theft across the Red River in Polk County.

Matthew Greger, 21, and Terry Clauthier, 24, both of Grand Forks, were arrested Thursday about 3:15 p.m. after a Grand Forks Sheriff’s Deputy spotted maroon car outside an apartment building in the 900 block of 43rd Avenue North.

The deputy was looking for it because a rural Thompson woman called 911 just before 2 p.m., saying she awoke to find a strange man entering her bedroom. She chased him out and saw a second man trying to steal her TV. Both men fled in a maroon car from the home, which is several miles east of Thompson near the Red River, about 11 miles southeast of Grand Forks.

The deputy saw the car about 3:15 p.m. pulling up to an apartment building on North 43rd Avenue and two men also matching the description from the woman. Both men walked toward the building. One deputy stopped one of the men; a second deputy quickly chased down the second.

The deputy soon had both Clauthier and Greger in custody.

In the trunk of the car was a 60-inch TV, later determined to have been stolen from a rural Crookston home. During that burglary, $5,000 in damage was done to a custom oak door, according to the news release from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department.

Both men were charged with felony burglary in state district court in Grand Forks on Thursday. They face similar charges in Polk County.

See that bolded part? Rural Thompson woman? That's my mom. She CHASED those scum-sucking degenerates of society away from her house. From MY house. Armed with nothing. She had no club, no knife, no gun. All she had armed was her anger.

She called me yesterday to tell me this story. She was awoken by three sharp loud thuds. She thought it was my dad just clumsily fixing something in the kitchen, but she walks out of the room and sees this guy with a goatee and a stupid looking stocking cap. She doesn't scream or anything, but growls, "You've got precisely two seconds to get the HELL out of my house!"

She's usually the type of person who would run and hide from something like this. Or scream. Or just be infused with fear. But she told me on the phone that she was ANGRY. The adrenaline rush was so overwhelming, she had never felt an anger surge like that in her life. There's no doubt if she had a weapon of some type and caught up to them, they would be in bad shape right now.

Thanks to her diligence when the car drove off and the security cameras at our house, the police were able to track these guys down in less than two hours after they tried to rob our place. Our TV was safe, but the door frame was broken, at about $5000 worth of damage. The insurance will cover it, but we need to pay a $1000 deductable of these dirtbags don't have the money, which they probably don't. They've successfully robbed about 20 homes in the Grand Forks area, taking only TVs and selling them dirt cheap for drug money.

This is something I never knew my mom had in her. When I was little she was afraid of child kidnappings and everything. She was afraid of walking alone and everything. She still is. But something came over her where she defended the home by herself, AND was able to nail these assholes and put them where they belong.

She gets the chance to meet them in court. I imagine she'll ask them something like, "what do you think gives you the right to take from me just because your lives are wretched and miserable?" I'm trying to get her to ask them, "How my ass taste?"
