What's the fascination with Herm Edwards?

I don't see it. Despite having a pretty good offense, he fired the perfect coordinator for Pennington, Paul Hackett. Hackett doesn't throw down the field, and that fits with Pennington's arm.

I hate to say it, but I think Hackett was the brains behind the operation in NY.

And doesn't Edwards believe in the cover-2 zone, yet he hired Cottrel, who didn't believe in that at all...

To me, Herm Edwards could be a successful coach, but only with the right coordinators, and he seems clueless on how to hire them.

I vote "nay" on Herm Edwards. He is administrator like Vermeil, yet knows a lot less offense than DV. And with Carl assembling the D talent for him here, his D will be no better than DV's D.

I give him the benefit of the doubt his year because of injuries, but I still would rather have 4 or 5 guys over him.

New England had a lot of injuries, too.

Yeah but their QB was still healthy, Pennington is a good QB, or at least he used to be.

He seems to always have entertaining press conferences. Other than that I see nothing.

No, he was never a good QB, it just took people a while to realize it. He can't throw the deep out. Never could. If you can't make all the throws, you don't have any chance of being successful in this league.

Not to the starting QB, the QB's backup, and then the QB's backup's backup, who was a guy signed off the street.

Jets injuries have really hit where it hurts.

IMHO Herm is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. He's taken his team to the playoffs like 3 out of 5 years or something, and that's pretty respectable, especially in the AFC East which, until this year, was a pretty tough division.

Penny had accuracy, but not great arm strength. He was "pretty good" for a few years. Average, I'd say.

But not great, not elite, and not worth his latest contrct.

I'm one of the few who like Herm. I don't understand what everyone has against him. Well I do, he coached under Marty for a very short period of time so everybody instantly thinks he becomes Marty II. He's made the playoffs every year his team hasn't been beat up by injuries though. Even this year his team hasn't quit on him. Plus he built a decent defense with Abraham, Ellis, Robertson, Vilma, etc.... I'm not sure if he's my first choice but I think he's better than some of the boobs out there.

I dunno. Herm seems like a really hands-off type of coach. The Jets did make the playoffs, but I question Herm's football knowledge. Surrounded by exceptional coordinators, I think Herm may be a good motivator, but other than that, I don't see what he brings to the table.

If he really had a hands-on approach, then why did he hire a DC that had the opposite D philosophy he did (Ted Cottrel).

I'm not a huge Paul Hackett fan, but he leaves, and the team implodes. I know all about injuries, but that doesn't completely explain why Curtis Martin is averaging about 3 yards per carry.

Starting Center and offensive leader Kevin Mawae's been out the whole season, and starting left tackle Jason Fabini, who is solid, has also been out.

The QB situation has been a nightmare, so everyone is keyed to stop the run. And CuMar ain't getting any younger.

No explanation for Cottrell. That was a mismatch. No idea why it happened the way it did.

"You play to win the game".

Maybe our reeruns would understand this simple message from Herm. Here's another simple message he could give them:

"Tackle the guy with the ball."

I agree. Herm Edwards is a good coach but not great. Plus, I don't think I could tolerate his press conferernces.
