*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

I am on a treadmill twice a week doing incline intervals. I'm sorry you disapprove.

Haha. When I spot my wife, I like to stand with my balls right over her head. I think it's hilarious. She does not. The other day she reached up and punched me in the nuts just before she started her set of bench press. That's not smart to do to your spotter....

We are probably not the adorable lifting couple that Luv was talking about.

I'm starting to have a lot of respect for your wife.

Incline treadmill pushes my friend. Step on, turn the incline as high as it can go. Once its up there, hop off and go around to the front and turn the machine off. Not just lock your arms on the dashboard and push it like a prowler.

Intervals would be better than just toiling away for an hour. Do you have a track? Another thing that's "fun" to do (if your treadmills can do it) is run on them without turning them on. We have some at our gym that we can do that with. You have to make the thing turn so you are running with quite a bit of resistance.

So, you're actually pushing the treadmill around the gym?

All of ours are "turn on". We don't have a track.

I actually don't mind doing some jogging on it from time to time, though. I'm not a "runner", and it's a good way for me to keep track of my pace and distance as I go. I don't think I'd ever do more than 3 miles on one though.

It actually loads the legs with a good amount of resistance, so if your gym doesnt have a sled or something similiar, its your best bet for eccentric-less loading. Sprinting on a treadmill just doesnt feel good to me, I'd rather run hills or push something, but to each their own.

Oh, we have a prowler. I'm pushing it in intervals twice per week as well. Flat. On the ground. Not on an incline. Just the thought of that makes me shudder...lol.

I ran a half marathon in Springfield end of December called the Run for the Ranch.

Anyway I have done many races the last few years and saw something new at this one.

A guy was running down the road talking to his wife on the cell phone in the middle of this race. He had forgot to bring some energy gel and was basically making a delivery order mid race. It was pretty funny.

Talking about treadmills, I was out for a walk a couple evenings ago, about 7ish I guess. Go down the street right next to the apartment complex's little gym room. I see a guy on one of the treadmills walking. I see a girl on an elliptical behind him. It's about 70 out, not a cloud in the sky, just a beautiful evening, and all I can think is "why the **** are these people inside?" And it's not like you have to do it on streets, although I was. We have a nice paved biking/hiking trail less than a half mile from here, that goes through lightly wooded areas for about 15 miles in either direction. And these people are on machines staring at a TV looking bored as shit.

I just don't understand people sometimes. Or all the time.

I love a good trail walk through the woods/suburbia with the wife.

We've covered a large portion of the trails throughout Johnson County over the years.

What do you mean "you will not understand?" I understand how it works. I know how the good gyms do actual programming followed by conditioning. That still doesn't mean that high-rep Olympic lifts are a good thing. But not all gyms do this. I get it.
Not meaning you don't understand the program or how it works, I meant how grueling it is. On paper (computer screen) doesn't look that tough. I've been humbled many times.
