Biking Question

I have a Road Bike which I really enjoy riding. I am wanting to branch out a little and take up Gravel and maybe Cyclocross. I have tried MTB, and just didn't care for it.

Any suggestions, tips etc? I am looking at the Salsa Warbird and Trek line of bikes right now.

Get outside, try to keep some level of social distancing from others on a ride and have some fun.
Nice! We almost came down to Flat Rock in Comfort, TX last weekend for a race, but we decided against it. There are a few more Texas races this season, so we may make one, but my kid has a pretty busy race season already.

Can't get me on the blacktop... but I'd love to get a gravel bike since we have some pretty epic grave grinding around here.

I ride every weekend, and I usually can ride once or twice during the week on days I work from home. When the days get longer, I'll pretty much ride daily, even if it's just a few quick laps on a flowtrail or hill repeats outside the house. I used to be into long day in the saddle putting in miles, but since I ride more and more with my son, we end up sessioning lots of jumps and such, not necessarily putting in miles.

I have been using Zwift a lot. With my crazy work schedule, it makes it convenient just to pop into the bedroom and ride for a couple of hours.

I need to come down your way and ride some gravel. Just not much gravel in the Branson area.

I've been staying away from group rides and races as I don't believe everyone is practicing social distancing, especially the racers. I'm doing a group gravel ride next weekend, will be standing in the back far away from everyone so I can start towards the rear of the pack.

Nice countryside around Comfort, Texas. Also, lots of folks using their MTBs on gravel rides around here.

I jump on zwift and my smart trainer, 3 nights a week for easy 10-20 mile spins.

Oh man. There is some awesome stuff here for gravel. The Big Sugar/Little Sugar event (if we get back to having events) is going to be amazing and give Dirty Kanza a run for its money. My personal favorite is the Hazel Valley Challenge which a friend of mine started years back with just a few riders getting up early to do it then friends and families joining after for a party. Now it's turned into a legit event.

Here's Crystal Anthony's (Giant-sponsored pro who lives in the area) article with her favorite routes in the area:

Walton family has been dumping a bunch to time, effort and money into MTB trails. Everyone I know that has ridden in the area, raves about them

We race enduro, which lets you have a little better social distancing, since you aren't riding in a pack. The races have been a little less fun because there isn't a lot of gathering around the keg and food post-race, but we've still had a good time.

We've been really fortunate. Riding is my son's main focus, and he's pretty much been able to do it MORE as a result of COVID. With virtual schooling, he can ride for the majority of the day and then do his schoolwork at night. He rides and competes at a pretty high level, so that's been awesome. It's also his primary social outlet, and he's been able to still ride with friends (socially distanced) and see people on the trails and such. Contrast that with one of his friends who's a nationally-ranked youth sport climber (2nd in nation for his age), and he hasn't been able to do a real competition AT ALL during COVID, and has been pretty limited on how much he can train in the gym. Just as he's really taking off in the sport, it basically gets shut down.

The mid-south (in Stillwater) has already gone to a "very social distant" event. We can now ride our miles anywhere. There are 6 sponsor bike shops across the country where you can ride their course. The Meteor in Fayetteville is one of the sponsors. I will probably do their course and stay overnight.

I didn't get signed up in time for the Little sugar last year, but I already have it on my calendar to get it done early this year. That does look like an epic awesome race.

I also signed up for the Chinquapin Holler last year, but that canceled. That looked like a good course too.

I see where you are hosting the Joe Martin stages races for the pros, I am hoping they open the gravel ride up again for the Amateurs.

I hope unbound gravel (AKA Dirty Kanza) doesn't cancel, but I would not be surprised if it does.

That is awesome about your son! I hope he continues to progress in his competitive racing level.
Funny you should say that about climbing. A friend of mine's daughter is a nationally ranked climber(she's in her 20s) and I know her competitions have been shut down as well. Really sucks.

He loves racing, but he also loves just being on his bike. The racing just really clicked for him, and he's won his last two races with times that are competitive with the adult open riders and not too far off the "pro" pack (that being said, we're talking about Southern-based "gravity" racing, so it's not like he's competing with the best).

As much as he likes racing, he spends a ton of time on his DJ and BMX as well, working on tricks and such. Here's an edit he put together of some riding down in Florida:

FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

Time for another bike edit from the boy. He broke his arm at the end of the filming for this one, so he's out for another 5 weeks. Sucks, since it's at the start of race season, and he'll miss a couple of national races he was going to do:

Hey bike guys got a quick question, my father in law found a bike and brought it over to me, trying to find out some more about it.

It’s a Lemond Buenoes Aires 853 Reynolds, or something like that, did a little looking at it seems like it’s supposed to be a pretty good bike. I doubt I will keep it since it’s a road bike so I’m trying to collect information on it before moving it along.

You have any idea what year it was manufactured?

Edit: Nvm, last manufactured in 2008. And yes, it's a pretty nice rig.
