NHL has model for player safety that NFL needs to follow
I realize taking big hits out of the game is something many hate, but the NHL is skating circles (pun intended) on player safety. The NFL is going to get sued over and over until it does something like what the NHL is doing.
https://twitter.com/NHLPlayerSafety In fact, I expect some bright lawyer bringing a lawsuit against the NFL to compare/contrast the NHL approach to the NFL's mediocre effort to help establish that the NFL was not serious about player safety, etc. etc. Like it or not (and I admit my feelings are pretty mixed too), I expect something like what the NHL is doing will come to the NFL eventually. |

I said "big hits", but that's wrong -- I should have said "dangerous hits".

Suspensions for dangerous hits? What's that? Just fine them $15k and move along.

Suspensions have to be on the table, but the NHL plays 82 regular season games before the world's longest imaginable playoff structure kicks in. Three game suspensions are hardly a blip for the NHL. A single game in the NFL has far greater impact.

Uhhh, the NHL is currently fighting a suit against former players. Publicly saying that there is no link between the sport and neurological problems while unsealed emails between Bettman and his top people say otherwise. So, let's not pretend that the NHL is some sort of patron saint when it comes to violent sports. Do they still allow fighting? Yes. This player safety division is pure cosmetics. And the fact that they are fighting back against the players leaves them open for more suits going forward.

Well, four games in the NHL is 5% of the season, while 1 game in the NFL is 6.25%. I'd expect we will start seeing 1 game suspensions for dangerous hits that aren't too bad, and perhaps longer for more dangerous hits. Again, I'm not saying I wholeheartedly approve. The Pats had an absurd 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty last week for pretty much hitting the guy (who was wrapped up) too hard. No launch, no headhunt. Just blasted him and 15 yards.

They are fighting over what happened in the past. The program now is MUCH better designed to protect the NHL against lawsuits for what is happening now. Versus the NFL, which is pretty much doing nothing. Hard to imagine the NFL doesn't get sued, and the NHL's approach isn't shown as a comparative.

Why do you think the Commissioners Exempt list exist?
Because the NFLPA blocks everything they can regardless of validity. The NFL can't just start creating a bunch of new rules. The Players association with freak. I know, i know ... a Union is never wrong, **** Goodell! **** the NFL!!

First, has the NFL even reached out to the NFLPA regarding anything like this? Not that I'm aware of. Second, as the Burfict situation shows, the NFL can suspend players for player safety issues. Third, the relationship between the NFL an the NFLPA is by far the worst among the major sports and their unions, and while the reasons vary, the stunningly arrogant, stupid and outright duplicitous conduct by the Commissioner and owners is a significant reason. For example, here's where an arbitrator ruled the owners were essentially tryign to steal $100 million from the salary pool. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...o-salary-pool/ Shit like this is why the NFLPA doesn't trust them for a second, and neither would I. Meanwhile, the erratic, insane "Conduct Kommissar" gives no reason for trust either. I used to be pretty pro-management in NFL/NFLPA disputes, but over the last few years it's pretty easy to see why the relationship is so broken. Meanwhile, the NFLPA's efforts to reduce practice time and contact is damaging the product.
