Anyone have an adult tonsillectomy?

Had one this past Monday (3/11) and I gotta say it’s more difficult than I thought it would be. At times the pain has been unbearable, even with Oxy and Tylenol. Combined with lack of sleep and mostly liquid diet and it’s been rough. If you’re thinking about having it done maybe think twice!

Age 19. Tonsils were so swollen it was blocking the airway. Had mono to boot. Distinctly remember the Dr. telling me I would be last in the surgical suite because they had to sterilize after my surgery. (Not before?).

Well do you usually douse yourself with water before or after your clothes catch fire?

I had a peritonsillar abscess once. That shit sucked!

I got it removed at the hospital. They gave me some type of pain reliever vapor that was supposed to relieve the pain while they scraped it out, but it completely wore off by the time they got to me and that was basically torture but the nurse and the doctor were very hot and I wasn't gonna let them know it hurt!

I expected that they would sterilize the place between every surgery, not cut on people in the same room for ten hours and wait until the end of the day to clean up.

How many miligrams of oxy are you on for it to still hurt that bad? Sounds rough

The recommendation is 5-10mg every 6 hours depending on pain. Many times I did the 10mg and it did very little. Day 5 post op feeling a bit better…breath could clear out a room thanks to the massive open wounds scabbing over in the back of my throat. Apparently possibility of hemorrhage decreases significantly after 10 days and by then hopefully the worst is over.

1970, US Navy Hospital, Philadelphia, 19 years old, had the pleasure of getting a "sitting up tonsillectomy" in a dentist chair. The idea was that a person sitting upright would bleed less than if the patient was lying on his back. What they forgot was that the patient would be sitting there (doped to the gills) looking at the surgeon, and having to swallow every drop of blood from the surgery.

After surgery Pain... They let me get addicted to Chloraseptic with codine to handle the pain. The idea being, stop the hideous pain now, get me off of Chloraseptic later. They were kind enough to explain that to me. They delivered a 9-bottle case under my hospital bed every morning for a week, and I'd sip the shit all day/night. Two other guys had the surgery before me, they were writhing in their beds from pain. I was the third person to get it. I hope they gave up on that procedure.

I have not had that procedure but ive bruised the tonsils on a handul of adult females over the years.
