Got the dog "de-snaked" on Saturday... (56k stay away)

We take the dog out from time to time to hunt, and around here there are rattlesnakes. There is this program not far from us that "de-snakes" your dog, that is, use a little shock therapy to prevent your dog from going near rattlesnakes and other snakes.

All in all it was interesting and there were quite a few dogs there, including a couple other German Wirehair Pointers (my breed). I thought a couple of the smaller ones were going to be launched into orbit when they got zapped.

Pics to follow...

Yeah, they have trained snake handlers and stuff. I think one of them was de-rattled, but the other one was rattling. Pretty sure the snakes are de-fanged, too.

Just make sure the dog doesn't learn to associate the collar with the shock. Dogs are smart when it comes to sh*t like that.

What do you hunt down there? Quail? I wouldn't think Pheasant would do well.

Well the collar was just for the session. I dunno how it works but I guess the dog associates snakes with pain now, and leaves them alone.

That's perfect.

If your dog learns the only time he ever gets shocks is sometime after a different collar gets put on, he'll eventually figure out that the collar is responsible.

My Weimeraner knows exactly what the shock collar means, although it's still effective in the field. It's just not effective as a training tool anymore.

Beats the hell out of me. The program works. People come from other states to get their dog desnaked here.

They have "refresher" sessions as well.

The refresher sessions is where you could get in trouble. Going too often could be a problem. Just like the dog will remember the shock and the snake, he'll remember getting a new collar put on for that moment.

Ideally, you'd put the collar on way in advance with the hopes that he doesn't ever put it in the same memory as the snake and the shock.

Or, if the dog truly has forgotten why he's supposed to stay away from snakes, he's probably forgotten the collar as well.

I'm sure if you're paying someone to do it, they are probably professional enough to know all of this.

Do you have a better idea? Putting the collar on the dog out in the field is not going to do any good. He will see the snake before you do. The idea is to teach him to stay away from a snake when HE sees it.

I have a dog who I put a shock collar on to stop his barking, he definately understands that he gets shocked while barked because he stops.. he also understands that when you take the collar off he can bark his head off. I'm sure it works for lots of dogs, I'm also sure lots of dogs figure it out.

No, I don't have a better idea. I think it's probably an excellent method if done properly.

I wasn't trying to say it was bad. I was simply warning that if done wrong, the dog will "figure out" that the collar is part of the experience.

You know, I'm not sure how it works either. I guess the fact that it is only done a couple times and the refresher courses are not supposed to be done that often.

I used a barking collar for my dog but instead of shocking her it made a high pitch noise that bothered her, it worked very good. I have tried to get Stumppy to get a collar for his dogs but he won't.
