CBS: The Bills are the team no one, including the Chiefs wants to see in the playoffs

Mentions the Chiefs several times, so figured you guys would want to see it.

The Bills are the team no one, including the Chiefs wants to see in the playoffs

Forget the Ravens. Forget the Bucs. The team you don't want to play in January is the Buffalo Bills.

With all due respect to the Packers, the AFC's No. 2 overall seed may very well be the second-best team in the NFL.

The Bills crushed the Dolphins 56-26 in a game Miami needed for their playoff hopes. And maybe we didn't see a 30-point win coming, but it's in line with what the Bills have been doing to teams in recent weeks.

Buffalo has had a top-five scoring defense since Week 12. If not for the Hail Murray they would have finished on a 10-game win streak dating back to before Halloween.

And then there's Josh Allen. The third-year franchise quarterback has, in consecutive weeks, set the Bills single-season records for passing touchdowns and passing yards.

What I love most about the Bills is that they aren't even letting teams hang around. Since that Week 10 loss to the Cardinals, not a single team has finished within a possession of the Bills.

I go back to that Week 6 loss to the Chiefs. Head coach Sean McDermott picked his poison and let the Chiefs' run game beat them up so that Patrick Mahomes wouldn't. Kansas City rushed for 245 yards and Mahomes passed for 225 yards.

But with about 5 minutes left in the game and down 23-17, the Bills forced a Clyde Edwards-Helaire fumble that would have given the Bills the ball at the Kansas City 31.

They would have had a chance to take the lead against the Chiefs there. But instead, the replay showed Edwards-Helaire's knee was down just before the ball came out. Mahomes took the Chiefs down for the field goal and that provided the final margin of victory.

Allen is a better quarterback today than he was then. The defense is playing far better ball. And after sweeping the Patriots and beating the likes of the Seahawks and Steelers, the Bills now know how to win big games.

I agree. I expect Bills to win but would not be shocked if they lost.

Daboll is not the same guy he was. He learned a lot of the college game and that's what he's bringing to Buffalo.

Daboll is more important than people realize
If Buffalo hires a "pro style'" offense OC Allen will look awful.

You realize coaches evolve and improve, right? It's not exactly a secret that Daboll is being given huge credit by pundits, and by Buffalo's own players, for the success this year. He's one of the hotter names in head coaching searches this year.

Promoting your QB coach only works flawlessly somewhere like KC where the true mastermind is Reid, so it doesn't really matter nearly as much who is promoted and gets the OC role. McDermott is a defensive coach, so he absolutely depends on a sharp mind at OC for the offense to reach its full potential.

that's why you just promote from within. Nothing changes but who calls the actual plays.

You do realize that promoting from within means nothing really changes other than who calls the actual plays right?

Like you can literally keep the same offense. Same terminology. Same system. Same everything except the guy calling the actual plays.

It's already in place.

A bigger mistake would be to scrap it all and start over with a whole new OC and new system, don't you think?

The problem there is playbooks get adjusted to. Daboll is the brains and creator. He has created the perfect scheme to minimize Allen's deficiencies (Reading a defense, throwing with anticipation, processing post-snap) while letting Allen's physical tools shine.

NFL teams will start countering better like KC did with messing up his pre snap reads or Tennessee with cloud coverage. Dorsey has never done it before, never called NFL plays.

It's not a guarantee. See Cleveland hiring Kitchens. Kitchens threw out the playback from Haley and used his own based on Arians. Disaster.

Maybe that works, maybe not. If it was always that simple we wouldn't see nearly as many problems with continuity around the league as we do. Just because a position coach "knows" a system doesn't mean they can just seamlessly perform to the same level at calling the plays and designing the offense as their predecessor.

You just keep repeating it because it's the only hope you have. The only hope you can muster is that context, history, and tendencies mean absolutely nothing and that each game is completely unrelated to the next.

It's beyond dumb.
So you mean to say that teams can do things differently which results in different outcomes?

Look, if your options are:

Hire an outside OC, new system, new terminology, new everything

or

promote from within and stay the course

it seems pretty cut and clear.

Don't scrap what's working.

That's all I'm saying.

This. Sure it's possible that Dorsey has success, but it's not guaranteed. Offenses change year to year even with the same coordinator in place. Buffalo's offense would likely look different in 2021 even with Daboll still in place to adjust to what defenses may try to do to counter their success, as you mentioned. If Daboll leaves there is no guarantee that Dorsey has anywhere close to the same level of success designing the plays and calling them on Sundays.

If Bills were playing the Dolphins again this week, after destroying them last week, then last weeks result would matter.

Because it literally just happened.

There is no time for a team to evolve in 6 days.

But the Bills game against the Dolphins in Week 2, has no impact on a game 13 weeks later.

And we saw that happen.

Bills-Dolphins was a 3 point game in September.

The Bills beat them by 30 points in December.

Same teams. Different results.

Teams evolve.
