Its all luck?

Thats why the current Sports Illustrated has a cover story on the "Cardinals Way" and we have the #1 rated farm system.

So if you didn't draft them, it didn't count?

We traded for Freese as an overaged, 24 year old non-prospect mired in A ball; 4 years later he was a WS MVP. I'd say the Cardinals developmental staff had a hand in that.

Waino was a 21 yr old kid that the Braves were worried wouldn't re-discover his mechanics after a major growth spurt turned him into a gangly mess of arms and legs. 3 years later he closed out a WS and went on to record back to back 2nd place CY young finished before was the age Shields is now. Yeah - the Cardinals system didn't do anything there.

Chris Carpenter was a sub .500 pitcher with an ERA approaching 5 and a bad wing before becoming a CY winner and post-season God.

And all those 'rehab projects' came in and adopted the philosophy espoused by Dave Duncan and the organization to become far better than they were before they got here.

And that's not even getting into guys like Craig, Jay, M. Carpenter, Lynn, etc..; unheralded prospects that have simply outperformed the byproducts of "The Greatest Farm System in Baseball History".

But you're right - we could've totally fired a smart hitting coach, starting shouting "MOAR HOMERS!!" and chalked everything up to back luck.

Because that's all it is for the Cardinals...right? They just get lucky a lot.

The team has one big money free agent on the roster and you're honestly trying to avoid crediting their developmental system. Unreal.

Love him or hate him Glass has given DM more resources than other successful GMs have had. Let him spend record amounts in the draft, move toward the top in international spending, and bumped the payroll when DM wanted to fix the pitching staff. There are numerous teams that have made the playoffs spending less than the Royals in recent years. Wasting money on offensive black holes and prospects not developing are the biggest problem.

Yep.....and both times DM has truly tried to compete with high expectations, (09 and this year) have been complete disasters. This guy is a complete fraud.

Jason Vargas, Jerome Williams, and Tyler Lyons worked out well. I.shall continue to build my fantasy baseball team around pitchers who are going against the Royals.

So when we sign scrap heap relievers like Kent Bottenfield, build up their value and then trade them for career underachievers that just 'somehow' become HOF quality players like Jim Edmonds, that's merely 'buying' a team.

I guess teams just prefer dealing with the Cardinals, eh? It has nothing to do with the value of players that are in our system (players the Cardinals drafted/developed, BTW); it's just that we have a clearer phone line so the teams like the Angels just preferred doing business with us.

Player development and organizational strength are far more than merely drafting players - as proven by "THE GREATEST FARM SYSTEM IN BASEBALL HISTORY!!!!"
