Is anyone familiar with diesel VW's?
I have a 2002 Golf TDI that occasionally hic ups while driving. Loses power for a short period of time, then goes away.
My mechanic thinks there is an air leak in the fuel system. He beliefs that in 2004 VW put fuel pumps in the tank. He knows mine doesn't thus the fuel injector is the pump. He acknowledges that he is not an expert on VW's. It will cost $2000 to replace. Crud! Can we put in a 2004 pump in? The tank is under the back seat. My wife loves the car. We don't really want to put $2000 into an 2002 car with 160k miles. Thoughts/ideas? |

Find a friend to help you replace the fuel pump. You can buy a fuel pump for under a $100

My son and I replaced the in-tank fuel pump in my SUV. Can't speak to how easy it would be in a VW, but it took us only a couple hours. I'm no mechanic, but this was pretty easy stuff.

An update:
Although the TDI's in 2002 didn't come with a fuel pump in the tank, there is a spot for one because they made so many versions of the Golf. If it was a gasoline Golf, there would be a fuel pump. There is an access door to the tank and a spot for a fuel pump. That would be a nice easy and MUCH cheaper solution. |

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-2005-V...-/113718501765 In 2004 they installed a pump in trunk as a pre or primer pump using the same injection pump. Haven't dealt with VWs much but it sounds like many a wife after 10 years being married... Just doesn't suck like it should I am thinking reseal and see if it fixes it. $30-40 plus labor.

[QUOTE=Holladay;
Yes, that is what we are looking at. Putting a "fuel pump" thru the trunk access panel into the tank. If that was what you were thinking about.[/QUOTE] Why, if you had an air leak, it would have air in lines, would run shitty, not want to start.

I drive a 2013 Golf TDI.
I don’t really have anything else to add. 160,000 is really barely getting warmed up though. |
