JUN 11 (afternoon)--Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that free agent defensive back Jason Belser has agreed to terms of a two-year contract with the club. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed. A native of Kansas City, Belser played high school football at Raytown South High School and is the son of former Chiefs defensive back, Ceasar Belser.
Belser (5-9, 196) is entering his 10th NFL season after spending his previous nine years in Indianapolis. He has played in 141 regular season NFL contests with 126 starts at defensive back, recording 979 tackles (628 solo) and intercepting 13 passes returning them 293 yards. He added 9.0 sacks (-59.0 yards), 63 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Belser also started six postseason games with the Colts. He recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and half a sack (-2.0 yards). His best year with the Colts came in ’96 when he had a career high 129 tackles (69 solo) starting 16 games. He intercepted a career-high four passes (81 yards) with two touchdowns and added five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and got his first career sack. He also saw action in the postseason for the Colts that year starting one game making 11 tackles.

Originally the Colts first pick in the eighth round (197th overall) of the ’92 NFL Draft, Belser recorded a career-high 5.0 QB sacks (-25.0 yards) last season. He was credited with 115 tackles (80 solo), six passes defensed, a forced fumble a fumble recovery. He blocked a 49-yard field goal vs. Washington (12/19/99) and a PAT at the N.Y. Jets (10/20/98).

Belser is a second-generation defensive back for the Chiefs. His father, Cesar, played defensive back for Kansas City from ‘68-71 and was a member of the Chiefs Super Bowl IV squad in ’69. The younger Belser was a prep standout at Raytown South High School where he played running back, cornerback, safety, kicker and punter. The Kansas City, Missouri, native was born May 28, 1970. Belser and his wife, Sarita reside in Indianapolis, Indiana.

A product of the University of Oklahoma, Belser became only the second defensive back in school history to have 200 career tackles with 214 (140 solo). He added 16 passes defensed, 13 interceptions (216 yards) with one TD, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 3.0 sacks (-22.0 yards).
