Biggest Oscar flub

I know the biggies are Annie Hall over Star Wars, Tomei for Vinnie, Shakespeare in Love.

But I was listening to Trey and Matt on Fresh Air w/ Terry Gross, and it reminded me of Blame Canada losing to that Phil Collins song, rep to the first who can recall it's name and/or the movie it came from.

And it's not like it was a total outsider exercise, the co-writer with Matt and Trey was Marc Shaiman, who has five nominations, has authored [I believe] every one of Billy Crystal's opening numbers [ie, iiittttts, a wonderful night for Oscar . . . Oscar Oscar. . . ], and has been musical director for the Oscars more than once.

I loved FG, but PF should have won. I'm biased though, PF is my all-time fav.

I think Titanic is a great movie.

I also think it's hard to pull off movies where everyone knows the ending going in. Titanic did it, and so did Apollo 13.

Best visual effects was a joke. Starship Troopers was groundbreaking, and the Titanic stuff was good, but pedestrian for the time.

There is much to complain about, but in reality there is no governing panel of experts making the most prudent choice. It's a vote of a specific club of industry people from many different job titles. Some are ancient (read: cutting edge doesn't win,) and some are more stupid than the next average moviegoer, they just, for instance, happen to executive produce something (read: brought some money to the table.) It is hard to think of it as representative of the industry as a whole.
