It sends a great message that you need to find happiness in the world and more than one person can be the one for you. I knew Robyn was gonna end up with Ted when she left their group and said he missed out on Ted. We all knew the mother was gonna die, so it made sense that Ted got back with Robyn.

Filler season had to be filled with something. Even the parts of the season that didn't feel like filler were in retrospect. If you edited this season down to 3 or 4 episodes you'd probably get something close to their original intent.

Well, yeah. Spending an entire ****ing season on the wedding was pretty reeruned. I guess I'm just satisfied that they ended the show with Ted and Robin getting together, because those two kids belongo together.

Tough break about the mother dying, but I never really got into that character anyway.

What was the point of Ted dating Zooey.. Or Jeannette.. OR THE MOTHER. He went through all of that only to end up with the woman who never wanted the things Ted explicitly wanted.

Actually, I always liked Zoey. She was the one who I really thought Ted should have ended up with.

But I did like Robin a helluva lot more than this Tracy chick.

So I just checked out Reddit, and they are pretty unanimous over there. Everybody hates the ending.

I have to agree that the writers dragged things out to a ridiculous level this season, and then they decided to squeeze about 6 weeks worth of plot into an hour. That was a horrible mistake.

Which is exactly the problem. Why do you even have an opinion about the Mother if there whole endgame was for Robin to be Ted's Happily Ever After? Her only purpose was to explain why there were two kids sitting on a couch listening to Ted talk.

I felt the same way at first. Now that I've had time to think about it, the show ended pretty perfectly.

The meeting between ted and the mother was perfect. And it would have been less perfect if she wasn't dying. Ending the show on that kind of a low note might have left a weird final imprint on a show that was supposed to be more uplifting even in the worst of moments.

And so the final few minutes basically closed the loop on all characters and story lines, justified almost every bit of the 9 seasons, and did it in a very respectful way to the dead mother. The last season was brutal, but even if it was jarring at first, the show ended the way it should have.

Of course I should've seen this coming... Thomas and Bays have always been about theoretical theatre nonsense and that is what I'd believe to be a totally Bertold Brecht ending to a show even though I only have a faint and nebulous notion of Brechtian theory.

Robin wanted to travel the world and didn't want to have kids. She basically got to do that and tie her own loose ends. Loop closed. The two were never right for each other during the show's run. The show was actually pretty successful in setting up a relationship where two people were compatible but in totally different places in their lives. I hated the Zooey storyline. But every single relationship, even Robin, the show always made it feel like something was just a little off. The mother was the only one where everything fell perfectly into place, right person at the right time. What makes the final Robin and Ted thing work is that they are both good for each other in that moment in ways they were not throughout the 9 seasons.

It was basically what the daughter said, he was telling them this story about how he was in love with Robin for years, through all the other women he dated before he met their mother, as a way to prepare them and guage their reaction to the idea of him dating Robin now. It may not be the most satisfying ending, but it actually makes more sense in the context of the series as a whole. If Ted and the mother live happily ever after, then why is he telling this story that's mostly about him being in love with someone else?

Where they ****ed up was this filler season, where they let you get too invested in the mother as a character. If this whole season was three episodes at the end of last season I think it would have come across a lot better.

I agree, the mother stuff was easily the best part of this season. The problem is, for this ending to work, the audience needs to be more invested in Ted and Robin than they are the mother. You need to leave the audience feeling happy that Ted and Robin finally got togther, not feeling like they got the rug pulled out from under them because this character they really liked is dead.

Series endings are over hyped and never live up to the hype.
They just can't live up to expectations.
MASH, Seinfeld-Great shows, terrible final shows.

I thought it was just fine. The series was about the life of the group, not the married life of Ted and mom.

Kid 1 and I were talking. The clips of Ted's children were of the kids at a MUCH younger age. The boy, has to be in his mid 20's by now.

Kid 1 says "Did they know what the ending was that many years ago?" "And were they able to keep it a secret?"
