David Letterman to retire from 'Late Show' in 2015

That puts him at right around 33 years on nightly t.v. Wow. Amazing. Wonder if Bill Murray will be on his last show... You know Chris Elliott will be back and there'll be a tribute to Larry Bud. You can tell it's time for him...but still sad. End of an era.

So I've replaced Conan's slot on my DVR with Fallon, which has its moments. Fallon's personality just requires a type to like him, and I'm not that type (I would describe that type as "happy go lucky"). His skits, his interviews with less banal guests, and his games that he plays with guests are almost always enjoyable television, moreso than Conan. But his monologue and when he's just shitting around about personal stories he's had with whoever the guest is (which is like 50% of the time it seems) is just too much Fallon for me -- although my lady certainly loves him, as all women seem to. He's super talented, just not my type. Perfect example: on his first night, the Will Smith "history of dance" skit was hilarious, but his interview with Will Smith was unbearable.

If Colbert, Stewart, Tina Fey, Joel McHale, or even somebody like Aisha Tyler were to replace Letterman, I'd probably change my DVR again to Late Night.
Same boat. Used to love Conan but he's in limbo and I can't remember the last time I watched him.

Good news for Craig, too.

I don't think his shtick would gel at the earlier time, and his contract I believe has a clause in it that if he didn't take over for Dave he gets a 7-9 million payout. Dude must be quite happy and Colbert with definitely bring fresh blood and a way better lead in for his show attracting new viewers.

I'm just sad that the The Colbert Report will be gone. I love it.

I find it a little add not knowing what to expect from him on Late night, since will not be in the The Colbert Report character, he will just be himself.

Really? Jimmy Fallon has Steve Higgins. Conan O'Brien has Andy Richter. Jimmy Kimmel has Guillermo. Chelsea Handler has Chuy. Craig Ferguson has that skeleton. I think the only ones who don't have dedicated sidekicks are Seth Meyers (who is unwatchably bad), Arsenio Hall (I think, I like many others have never watched it), and, well, David Letterman.

Definitely sad and I hope he gets to do a bit of his more risky stuff and isn't roped in. Part of me thinks he's got enough juice to do it his way and if they don't like it he'll be out of work for about 2 seconds.

I know what you're saying, but so much of that persona can't be scripted, and that's a testament to his innate creativity and cleverness. It's not hard to think that he'll be just as successful outside that character

I said a sidekick like Ed McMahon and that nowadays the bandleader is the sidekick. Higgins is the announcer and basically the equivalent of Paul Shaffer. These people actually have another role instead of a real 'sidekick' in the Ed McMahon sense. I guess I'll give you Richter, but didn't he leave and just come back as announcer? Even Letterman does some banter and bits with his announcer.

Yeah, no.

Who are the biggest shows today?

Letterman -- band leader sidekick
Fallon -- non band leader sidekick
Kimmel -- no real sidekick
Ferguson -- no real sidekick
Meyers -- band leader
Conan -- non band leader

It depends entirely on the personality of the show.

I think Colbert would go without a sidekick, but if he goes with one, Amy Sedaris must be towards the top of his list.

Uh, Ferguson - Geoff the Robot

Colbert rarely interacts with anyone else except for his guests, so I don't expect he'll have a sidekick.

Ferguson has the best and cheapest sidekick in Geoff the gay skeleton.
