If we were able to get a top 50 prospect and Hosmer to take on Hosmers contract, I'd 100% do it.

I don't see what the down side to that would be. He makes $20 million next year and then can opt out or make $13 million for the next 3 years after that.

The downside is he definitely isn't going to opt out of his deal, because he's not beating 3/$39M on the open market.

So you're paying the Padres $60M for said prospect in basically a transfer fee. If you get even 6 years of solid MLB starter production from that prospect, you probably come out ahead. But you're paying a lot for it up front.

Not that the Royals can afford to do moves like this but buying the prospect by taking on the Hosmer contract doesn't have to block anyone - just release Hosmer as a sunk cost when the time is right or do what the Padres are doing and see if you can trade him with a lesser prospect and take on a bit of his salary. His defense isn't the level of Pratto, but it's still better than a lot of first baseman out there. Not sure if he's a positive in the club house anymore, but if he is, there's that as well for a team looking to turn the corner. BUT...if a top prospect isn't a part of this, considering it is silly.
