Washington Commanders congressional hearing

Already off to a spicy start.

Edited blanket statement: everybody is aware this is a waste of time and taxpayer money and all politicians suck eggs. It doesn't mean we can't enjoy the schadenfreude of watching the NFL and Snyder in particular get dragged over the proverbial coals.

But it does not change the fact Snyder now owns the property which includes the stadium, team, equipment etc. The city received the increased tax revenue from the games, concerts and other sporting events for the last 25 years. Which probably total well in excess of the 70 million.

All the assets are privately owned. it seems like gee we do not like that guy so let's take his team is a bad precedent to start.
But snyder has no downside risk. So he can weasel his way into getting tons of public investment. But he can’t lose money because of the nfls special arrangement that requires other owners to revenue share. All while getting away with a shitload in terms of not opening their books to see. They absolutely deserve a ton of scrutiny. And an owner who is failing this city should be somewhat accountable to the fans and the city, not owners in other markets. Owners are way too protected and that needs to change.

So when an owner thumbs his nose ar everyone showing how much he can get away with and the nfl is complicit in it, they open themselves up to scrutiny. At the very least any organization with a history of very very gross misconduct can certainly be open to scrutiny. If a private business is breaking rules left and right and are not held accountable that is plenty of reason for oversight. At the very least it doesn’t justify the outrage that Congress dare go there.

What are the details of that? Like the relevant dates and times and people whose claims were defended with payments from the slush fund.

The current members of the Oversight Committee are not hypocrites just because of things attributable to other previous members of Congress.

If you want to make that case you need to make a case.

The fact that sports owners can own failed teams for decades and still get filthy rich is very problematic. And cities and fans shouldn’t be punished for it. They need skin in the game. Remember how enraged we were with pioli? Imagine if snyder was our owner for several decades. It means he makes so much damn money on this team that a $10m fine is an absolute joke to him. The worst owner in football should not have it this cozy.

Long story short, Daniel snyder has done a LOT of really shady shit and broken a lot of laws. Over and over and over again. And when challenged he obstructs justice and thumbs his nose at everyone. Is it a priority for Congress? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s hard to be outraged about a really really bad person getting scrutinized.
