How do you define a sports dynasty and what does this current Chiefs team need to do

Been considering this a bit lately. Generally speaking I’d have considered any sports team that wins three championships in a five-ish year period a true dynasty.

The Patriots have two, obviously, early 2000s and then the mid 2010s. Early 90s Cowboys. 49ers in the 80s and Steelers in the 70s, IIRC.

Then I was considering things and wondering what we’d need to accomplish in order to be labeled a dynasty. We’ve currently got the one Super Bowl win from the 2019 season. It’s now the 2022 season.

We’ve hosted four straight AFCCGs in that timespan as well. Does that factor in at all or is it solely based on Super Bowl wins?

I think it does a bit. For example, if we’re able to win the Super Bowl this year, I think I would consider us a dynasty.

But I don’t consider the 90s Bills a dynasty so clearly at least one or two actual Super Bowl wins is a requirement.

What are your thoughts?

many crappy QB's have one ring. he will need more than one to separate himself. Chiefs need like 3 to be considered a dynasty of any kind.

Good question.

I know most don't generally consider them a dynasty and they were before my time so it's tough for me to say. What was their success like outside of that three-year stretch?

Absolutely not. The thought wouldn't even cross my mind.

You'd be better off trying to convince me that the 90s Bills squads who went to four straight Super Bowls is a dynasty than the 90s Chiefs at any point.

You've got to have some sort of postseason success. In order to make it to four SBs, you'd need to win at least 2 playoff games each year, which is really impressive. Without looking, that tells me that the Bills won at least 8 playoff games in that four year span. Did the Chiefs even win four playoff games total throughout the 90s?

Of the past 4 years, I think last years is the one that just pisses me off the most. The 18 one was just new and exciting. Would have been cool to win it, but you knew it was just the start. Then the win in 19, return in 20. The 20 one sucks sure, but the injuries to the OL just doomed it and it is what it is. Can't really control that.

Last years was the dick kick IMO. They just gave it away.

Yeah, that Bengals AFCCG loss will likely be viewed as the worst one when the dust settles.

Patrick was playing otherworldly well in the Wild Card, Divisional, and then for the first half of that Championship game. That choke job he pulled was truly inexplicable.

I'm not sure we'd have beat the Rams, but the Bengals got pretty close and I think we matched up better against the Rams.

Though that Tampa Bay Super Bowl was rough as well. Despite the OL issues, we had a chance. Receivers dropped or didn't connect on four potential TDs. IIRC, Hill, Robinson, Hardman and Darrel Williams all dropped catchable balls in/near the end zone.

And of course the offsides lol.. I definitely think we knock the Goff-led Rams off in that 2018 Super Bowl.

Ugh.

To put it in perspective, winning Super Bowls is hard and if you consider each game 50/50, going to four AFCCGs, appearing in two SBs and winning 1 is kind of exactly what you'd expect in the end.

Biggest issue is that we don't generally consider our odds to win each game 50/50 and being a lucky bounce away from wins in two of the losses stings.

Not a dynasty, but they have their place in history by winning back-to-back. They didn't have enough playoff success in surrounding years to be a dynasty.

The 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys, and two different Patriots teams would fit your criteria. Kind of harsh but that's probably correct.

Were the Chicago Bulls just two separate dynasties instead of one? Outside of Jordan/Pippen, the other players were entirely different from 1991-1993 to 1996-1998. Their two most important players of course, but it's still a different team.

6 rings in 8 seasons for the Bulls. Gotta call that one a single dynasty. Pretty different from the Patriots situation IMHO.

Plus football requires way more components than basketball, simply due to the fact that offensive players don't play defense and you have 11 guys on the field instead of 5 guys on the court. You also have the special teams element in football that doesn't exist in basketball. Bulls had a GOAT head coach, a GOAT superstar player, and a GOAT sidekick player. That's enough to make you very difficult to beat.

With all the Division Titles, incredible W-L record and a few more AFC Championships, I think they would certainly be.
