*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Nice job. I'm thinking about getting back into keto. I was on it for 2 months and then had to have my appendix out and ****ed it all up.

They don't have bodies that I think are unachievable without it. I feel like a lot of people on here have the "If that duded is bigger than me he must be juicing" mentality.
This guy nails it although others have said a lot of this already.

How often are you checking with keto sticks?

What are your 20 different things? Eating on keto for me tended to get boring after awhile.

No one is butthurt about Crossfit. There's a difference between recognizing something as being potentially dangerous and being upset about it. There's also a supreme superiority complex that comes along with Crossfit (not saying you have it), which is severely off-putting.

But they don't JUST do the WoDs. They also have specific programming that helps them get to where they want to be, which goes against the random basis of Crossfit.

No one is saying you won't get in shape. But the "best shape of my life" doesn't mean anything. If you go from zero to doing something, you'll get in shape. I'm in the best shape of my life without doing Crossfit. Does that mean my way is ideal for everyone? Nope. It kinda feels like all the "OMG P90X is the best thing ever! Best shape of my life!" crowd switched over to Crossfit.

People wouldn't have a problem with Crossfit if their members recognized that 1) Crossfit won't make you so awesome at everything that you can just do Crossfit and beat anyone that actually trains for something, 2) Crossfit's emphasis on time promotes a sacrifice of form on Olympic lifts which can be dangerous, as evidenced by the large numbers of people that are injured doing Crossfit, and 3) there are safer, just as time-efficient, ways to get in the "best shape of your life." There's no doubt that some gyms are good. There's no doubt that there are far more which are bad.

The problem is that it feeds into the ridiculous notion that JUST doing the Crossfit random WoD will make you awesome at everything.

For instance, I lift and also play a shitload of soccer. Do I credit the soccer for my lifting? I guess in some small way it helps me somehow. But the reality is that it's the specific, directed programming that helps my lifting more than anything else.

This kind of deception isn't confined just to Crossfit, though. It's been going on in lifting circles for decades. Guys see a workout in Muscle and Fitness with a ridiculous schedule and ridiculous number of reps and follow it because the guy that made it up was FREAKING HUGE, MAN!!! But he didn't disclose that his workout only made you awesome if you're on steroids. Whoops. But guys still dutifully do the workouts, and when they don't get huge, they blame it on something else, and not the workout that was designed for a guy on 'roids.

I know that's the funny stereotype, but, from my perspective, that's backwards. I spent more time at my other gym than I did at crossfit most weeks and the crossfit people were very cool about it.

I find that my old school weight lifting friends have the superiority complex. They make fun of it like you guys do on here (not necessarily you) and really don't have a great handle on what we do. Meanwhile, they would regularly throw in some metcon workouts each week that could easily have been a WOD on the crossfit site.

Yeah. You went through this the other day. That's not at all what I was trying to say. I guess I shouldn't have used that phrase. I was trying to say that there was nothing wrong with doing other programs along with crossfit. Everyone seems to want to bag on crossfitters for working out after the WOD for whatever reason. My point was that there's nothing wrong with that. It was actually encouraged. I don't know of any elite crossfitters claiming they got there by only doing the WOD every day.

I don't think this notion exists inside of Crossfit. One of the things I realized I needed to do was improve my squat & deadlift. They gave me specific coaching on form and encouraged me to work on those moves in addition to the WOD. They absolutely acknowledged the work I did at my other gym when those lifts started to improve

absolutely there's nothing wrong with it. I think somewhere there was a mis-communication as most of us were saying a lot of those guys results were from additional strength training along with whatever they are doing from a crossfit point of view. I would even venture to say that your workout of the day and conditioning can be used interchangeably, no? Most serious strength routines advocate some sort of conditioning, whether its prowler work, hill sprints, metcons, high rep oly lifts or whatever floats your boat- conditioning is conditioning.

Shit I've been on 5/3/1 for a long time, and jim w always preaches to not ignore conditioning. (even though I do lol)

Yeah, I think they work great together. I really hate saying that I crossfit because it really involves everything. Are you aware that a couple of days each the WOD is a heavy lift day? It's not ALL running and jumping rope.

I remember one day I was working out at my "normal gym" with my buddy who is a personal trainer. Our workout included kettlebell swings and cleans and some guy came up and asked us if we were crossfitting. My buddy was so pissed I thought he was going to explode.

Hah, i can understand why. I had a lady friend post a video on facebook of her doing those 'kipping' pull-ups. All her friends gave her the 'you go girl!' type comments, I commented and asked her if the bar had electric current passing through it by the way she was flailing around and reason why she wasnt doing a normal pullup and explosion ensued lol.

So what do the strength type WOD typically look like? Does it include some sort of programming like 'work up to 80% of 1rm for 3 sets of 5' or something along those lines?
