****2017 NFL Draft Thread**** (NO Spoilers)

Let's ****ing do this.

Rules:
1. No spoiled picks in this thread, all weekend. This means that as tweets are leaking picks a few minutes before the selection is announced live, you don't post it in this thread (ex: embedded tweets), reference it in this thread (ex: Joe Slapdick says it's McCaffrey to Tampa) or hint at it (ex: "it's a RB!").

Don't be a dick.

Otherwise, have fun, talk shit, freak out and lose your goddamned minds. It's Draft Weekend. The hot takes in these threads are so funny.

I'll also be starting threads for each of our picks as they are made, with videos and notable stats/takes in the OP. Pure knee jerk gold to reference in the future.

2018 Watson

Passing Yards: 4,165 (15th)
YPA: 8.2 (7th)
AYPA: 8.8 (8th)
YPG: 260.3 (18th)
Rating 103.1 (6th)
QBR: 60.7 (15th)
TD%: 5.1 (15th)
Touchdowns: 26 (12th)

His stats in 2018, while better in some areas, still aren’t at that elite mark to me. He’s Alex Smith who’s not afraid to make throws downfield in clutch time.
Interesting, I didn't know that.

I thought he had the tools to be a top 10 QB, arm strength notwithstanding. He's got the athleticism, toughness, good arm talent, etc. I'd still rate him higher than Smith overall. Always thought BOB was his biggest problem.

Oh yeah, Watson shines the brightest in the clutch and savors those moments. That absolutely puts him above Smith. I would be his ultimate homer had the Chiefs drafted him as being a good QB with a clutch gene is something the Chiefs really only had with Trent Green before Mahomes. I still don’t think he’s a rival to Mahomes in BOB’s system. I think he could be very good in the right situation (Like the Patriots - and the Pats subreddit has fallen in love with this idea).

I think Big Brain is his biggest problem too. Watson would shine in Belicheck’s offense and with the Pats D. He’s gotta stop taking so many hits, though. His elusiveness and ability to run is a big part of his game. But he took the nasty hits we all thought Jackson would take this year because Watson holds onto the ball so long behind a questionable line.

Yep. I certainly made that argument.

It will be interesting to see what he does without Nuk but he's better than I imagined he would be.

Completely agree.

Watson would be a lot more successful at NE, NO, LAR, maybe just anywhere just not with BOB. And his biggest issue is holding on to the ball too long. Well, that and not being able to read defenses worth a damn. In NE/NO/wherever's system, he'd be getting rid of the ball quicker, he'd be much further along in terms of reading defenses, and so forth.

Well the reading defenses thing is exactly the reason Reid took Mahomes so that tracks

agreed, but you need to be in a system that takes advantage of your strengths, like Montana and Walsh's version of he WCO.

I think Watson would be better in a system where he got rid of the ball, and more short and intermediate passes.

He doesn't really have the arm to sit back and heave it; and he's gonna get killed that way.

That QB was also one season removed from winning MVP and appearing in the SB , which would make 0 sense to draft another QB that high.

I like Trent Green as a person and he certainly had his moments in some regular season games but it’s difficult for me to consider a guy with an 0-2 playoff record, an even TD to pick playoff percentage and who never threw for over 212 yards in a postseason game as someone who has a clutch gene.

Oh yeah, I won’t argue.

I think if I was asked to pick a Chiefs QB since 2000 (pre-Mahomes) for a fourth quarter drive, down 4, with 2 minutes left, I’d have picked Green.

Nobody said he would bust.

They said he'd be a slightly better version of Alex Smith.

Which is EXACTLY what he's been.

He's fine. He's a good, solid quarterback. He's nothing resembling elite and he's soon to be paid as though he is.

And when that happens, the Texans will be done contending for the duration of his contract.

He's very close to being elite. He has a shitty coach.

We'll see. 50% of all of Watson's completions have been to DeAndre Hopkins since 2017. That is a crazy statistic. He throws to Hopkins like we always wanted Smith to throw to Hill. With some of the best weapons in the league, Watson still didn't throw for 4K and put up simply "good" statistics this year. It's hard to understate just how reliant Watson was on Hopkins and how huge of a weapon he's now lost. We'll see how that impacts him moving forward.
