I read on this board it was Smith who lobbied AR to do this.

If I'm not mistaken, I originally responded to a claim made by you, Mr. BryanBusby. Your Tu Quoque argument at this point seems a little unfair to be perfectly honest.

Nonetheless (and even though the burden of proof is not on me), I'll give you one example of Wally exercising "oversight" in respect to the defensive side of the ball. He just fired his DC.

There have been several defensive coaches who completely bombed as head coaches that turned into solid to outstanding coordinators even for Offensive-minded coaches. Wade Phillips has even publicly said he knows he's a terrible head coach but is confident in his skills as DC.

Wade Phillips (multiple times)
Rod Marinelli
Gregg Williams
Romeo
Gus Bradley

Whoever the DC will be they will have complete control of the defense. Louis Riddick even brought this up on NFL Live the day before Sutton was fired. Said Reid will choose a DC who is essentially in charge of the defense. Personnel. Schemes. Everything.

You did, but you're also pushing an idea that would actually go against the commonly accepted thought procees. So.....

Like, nobody is insisting that a failed Head Coach can't be a good coordinator. What some people are saying is that you want to at least see some quality HC kind of traits in a situation like this considering how much freedom whoever they hire will have.

But Wade Phillips actually had success as a Head Coach over his career and it's not a surprise he's more than equipped to handle his own unit without any help from McVay.

I'm not "pushing" anything, actually.

I'm merely saying that the notion that Wally is utterly divorced from the defensive side of the ball is rumor (at best) and completely silly (at almost best).

The fact that he spends time on the sideline teaching and grooming his young, stud QB might lead some people (the commonly accepting ones, anyhow) to believe that he has nothing whatsoever to do with the defense is kind of ridiculous.

It's almost as though these people think Wally only does part of his job. You really don't believe that, do you? If so, that's where our viewpoints diverge.

Not really. Maybe just a few weeks in Buffalo but that quickly ended.

Except for Bradley and Lebeau, most of the list I showed have worked for Offense-minded head coaches. There's no better example than Romeo. I knew the guy was going to be off the charts bad as a head coach when KC hired him. He's been a solid independent thinking DC despite having horrendous qualities for a HC.

Man, I'd be thrilled to call this guy DC

Is he the sexiest name around? certainly not, though he does boast some nice accomplishments on his résumé

What's thrilling for me is that we're ditching a tired old scheme that's brought us nothing but failure... now we get to chuck a bunch of these ****ing bums we have and start fresh with a focus on D linemen, not linebackers

Is finding good D line players tough, yes, but not as hard as finding stud OLBs for a 34... guys custom made for that position are a rarity, often as not you gotta take a DE and HOPE he can transition at the sports highest level

Spags (get used to it) represents genuine change, and that's good enough for me

At least for now...

This is where I’m at.

I think Spags is catching a lot of heat for a couple of defenses with NO and NYG where there was a lot of bullshit going on around him that made things challenging.

He’s going to come here (probably) and get to completely focus on this defense, flipping things on it’s head. Am I saying I’m 100% confident that it will work? No, that can’t be said for any hire off the bat. But I think it has potential. The players will respect his resume and his scheme will be fresh.

I don’t know how it goes during game weeks, but during all the practices I’ve been to at TC Andy almost always follows the offense when they shift fields. He’s almost never with the defense unless talking to a specific player.

If I had to break it down to percentages, I’d say it’s 90/10 in time spent with offense/defense. From what I’ve seen.

I’m still digesting the possibility of bringing Spags on...right now I think it’s a terrible move that will end up resulting in a “I’m sorry, Pat. I should have known it would end like this” type of move.

Where the string of terrible defenses continues and forces Mahomes to score every time he touches the ball.

Ditto. Can't contribute any more to the thread than this but I'll continue, and go back to, lurking it. I don't know a lot of the personnel around the league but I find this thread and Spags, for better or worse, fascinating.

Keep fascinating me gang.

That makes sense with Andy owning the O. He doesn’t need any distractions.

However, on the other side of the coin, the more experienced DC may be more set in their ways and perhaps less flexible. Wonder if Andy would entertain someone like Spags for quality control (personnel) and someone younger, hungrier and more relatable to the players for scheme and player development?

Interesting proposal. Would Spags' ego allow? Who would we bring in for scheme, or do we utilize one of the position coaches? Seems unlikely to have and pay for 2 separate DCs though
