*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

That and people who don't care if the gym they go to is viewed as happy go fun time play gym where no one cares about fitness. Oh, and of course the facilities won't be as fancy or large with as much equipment. I hear people say they don't have enough of this and that, but I think it is a pretty good deal for the price you pay.

Talking fitness cost I pay $42.00 a month at Great Life Fitness Deer Lake GC. That pays for the 24hr fitness center and unlimited golf, cart fee not included.
The quality of both isn't really all that great. As much as I'm paying for the golf I have used the fitness center maybe 10 times. Oh and it's a family membership.

With the cost of gas and time it might take to drive to a different gym 4-5 times a week I don't think most people give too much of a shit about the difference in price of memberships.

I pay $48/month at the local YMCA. Only place in town that has a daycare. That price is the corporate discount price since I work for the city. It's usually $58.

Two PRs set tonight:

Barbell squats: 145 lbs for 12 reps
Deadlift: 135 lbs for 12 reps

I know my deadlifts should be higher than my squats. Gotta get over that mental apprehension of having past back problems.

Also, which is more impressive: leg press 270 lbs for 5 reps or 250 lbs for 12 reps?

It's hard to have deadlifts higher that squats with that high of reps. I personally wouldn't have you do deads with that high of reps as it really doesn't serve much of a point as deads are usually the most technical of lift for most people in a gym.

Yes, it uses your entire body well which makes it difficult to maintain proper form through high rep fatigue sets. Higher risk than reward with high rep deads especially if you are worried about your back. I'd rather lock in form for less reps and more weight.

Nice job on the PR's! Lewdog makes a good point about the deads - higher reps most people form will break down and this is where they get sloppy. Sloppy deads = injury waiting to happen. Also, leg press is a accessory machine, and you shouldn't be trying to go 'heavy' on it IMO. Those types of leg machines work great with rep schemes of 15+, and legs seem to grow great with longer time under tension (sets that last 30-40 sec).

Squat/dead heavy then hit those accessory machines up for volume.

We spend almost $100 a month for a family membership to our gym.

We get unlimited yoga, group fitness, cycling, "boot camp", small group fitness, bike rentals, etc... with that.. but still.

I'd be happy joining somewhere much simpler, but my wife makes use of all the different classes and is friends with all the people and trainers, which helps to motivate her.

Plus, it looks like this:

The irony is that it looks like that, but my wife and I both spend the majority of our time in the basement, which looks like a freaking dungeon.

I pay $10 per month. I don't take all of the classes or tan or anything though. If I wanted to take unlimited classes, tan, and bring a friend, then the premium membership is $20 per month. They get most of their money through encouraging the personal training. Of course, I encourage people with goals and little know how to do the personal training as well.

A lot of the "group fitness" classes my wife does have 2-3 people in them (they call these small group fitness classes), so it's almost like personal training, and that's included in the membership. So that sort of eases the pain of the membership when I think that we could be paying for a personal trainer on top of the gym membership.
