Tony Dungy on lack of offseason movement

I was browsing over the Colts board just reading stuff... and somebody posted this bit from Tony Dungy, I thought it was interesting and figured I'd share it here since the Chiefs are kinda in the same boat...

Quote:
Q: Do you ever get tired of being asked about the lack of off-season acquisitions?

A: I know our philosophy and our people in this building know that. Unfortunately, the general football fan believes in fantasy football. The tendency is to look and say, ‘You’re better if you add this many better players or if you add this many Pro Bowlers.’ It’s hard for someone to believe that (Colts defensive end) Josh Thomas might be better than Hugh Douglas. That just doesn’t happen because Hugh Douglas is a big name, a guy who made a lot of money and who had a lot of teams after him. Therefore, he must be better. The team that got Hugh Douglas, in most people’s minds, came out of the off-season better than we are. You’re never going to change people’s thought process on that. You have to believe in your personnel people, your philosophy and your coaches. You have to believe in what you see. I always talk to the team about perception vs. reality. There are a lot of perceptions in the NFL that are never going to go away. You can’t spend a lot of time worrying about it.

On the flip side, Tony Dungy is a Marty/Mora/Green clone, winning in the regular season but never making it happen when it counts.

The Colts zone for contending is going to come to a close in a hurry when they can no longer afford to keep their stars James and Harrison because they paid too much for Peyton. Its already starting to happen that they are in cost cutting mode.

Irsay came out yesterday and said they're going to shell out whatever it takes to keep all 3.

When you are looking for excuses, I suppose this is about as good as any other bad excuse.

And blow the rest of the team up huh? James/Manning/Harrison has to be half of their salary cap easily.

On the flip-flip side, he is espousing DV's vision, which stands starkly opposed to the final Marty years in KC.

Well actually Manning counts less against the cap this year than he did last year. The difficult part is the signing bonuses. Irsay had to pay money out of his own pockets to cover Manning's 33 million bonus because the Colts just don't generate enough revenue. With the crazy signing bonuses we saw last offseason, I could easily see Harrison getting a 20 M bonus and Edge getting an offer 10 M+ from Miami.... good luck.

Gotta find the cap room and have enough to pay the other players too. You can't just pay 3 guys on the team and sign everyone else to the minimum.
