Nine students found dismembered after vanishing on vacation

https://www.newsweek.com/students-fo...oaxaca-2040427

At least nine dismembered bodies, feared to be those of missing students vacationing in Mexican state of Oaxaca, were discovered beside a highway on Sunday, local media reports.
The remains were found inside and around an abandoned car, covered by a tarp stained with blood, according to El Financiero and Periodico Central.
A bag containing eight pairs of severed hands was also recovered. Mexican Cartels are infamous for amputating hands of victims.
The bodies had bullet wounds and visible signs of torture, according to local media. The car was located in San José Miahuatlán, near the border of Puebla and Oaxaca.

ID cards found at the scene matched missing people Angie Lizeth Pérez García and Angie Lizeth P.G., 29, who was reported missing from Santa María Huatulco in Oaxaca on February 28, and Lesly Noya Trej, 21,
reported missing from San Pedro Pochutla, also in Oaxaca, that same day.
Others reported missing include Brenda Mariel N., Jacqueline Ailet N., Noemi Yamileth N., Raul Emmanuel N., Rubén Antonio N., and Rolando Armando N.

Chilling CCTV footage captures the last known sighting of the group on February 24. The friends were seen driving along the Atlixcayotl highway near the town of Atlixco,
approximately 90 miles west of where the remains were later discovered.

Authorities have not confirmed the discovery of the bodies is cartel-related; the manner of the killings could suggest criminal organizations were involved.

Cartel violence in Mexico, driven by the high stakes of drug trafficking and organized crime, employs ruthless tactics—from mass executions and brutal dismemberments
to widespread kidnappings—to assert their power.

It's kind of wild for this to happen in Oaxaca, as it's not generally heavy on cartel influence. It appears that some of it may be related to protests/disputes over land rights down there. There are conflicts between developers and the indigenous people (probably an oversimplification, but yeah...) down there.

It's a fascinating part of Mexico that I really love... and we are headed there in two weeks for a mountain biking trip.

Yeah that sucks, I was in Puerto Escondido last November for the second time in and absolutely love Oaxaca. I know they have defeated attempts to make PE into a resort town but soon they’ll be opening up direct flights from Houston. Personally I like the rustic feel of the place. Hopefully it doesn’t become another Tulum.

Fixed your spelling error.

Show some pride, dammit. You're on CP.

I'll take odd & silly signs of dominance for $1000, Alex.

Well, that looks about as appealing as a hemorrhoid.

I'm guessing north is on the left.

You’d be surprised. I saw this pic posted somewhere recently and learned that the right was Mexico while the left was America.

I have a sister in law who's from Mexico and from what she tells me it's worse now than in any time in history. Her family are old money Spanish with a big ass historic structure\castle on their property and they're practically sheltering in place...Last I spoke to her one of her cousins got disappeared. Keep that in mind.
