Chiefs' Mike DeVito willing to join free-agent market

Mike DeVito could very well join the free-agent market soon.

The versatile veteran defensive end/tackle, who tore his Achilles during a Week 1 matchup against the Titans, will likely be asked to take a pay cut in order to remain on the roster, according to multiple league sources familiar with the situation.

DeVito, 30, is scheduled to make $4 million in 2015. But after several inquiries from other clubs at the combine, he might feel like he could get the same on the open market.

Before his injury, DeVito was viewed as the No. 7 3-4 defensive end in football, by Pro Football Focus. In 2012, his final year with the Jets, he graded out 12th among ends.

With the market for a player at a similar age and position already heating up -- according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Ricky Jean Francois has visits lined up with the Redskins and 49ers -- a fully healed DeVito may be right to take a calculated gamble, especially with many run defense-needy teams out there with money to spend.

It might be deemed tampering but it depends on who contacted whom.

If DeVito's agent said to Dorsey "Are you planning to keep or cut my client? I need to know because there will be interested teams.", I think that's okay.

But if teams were contacting his agent or DeVito himself without speaking with the Chiefs first, then I think it might be considered tampering.

But this stuff goes on all the time. As long as it's not egregious, I don't think the league cares.

I have no outrage. He's not at the top of the game, he doesn't play QB, and he's not an important player.

I think you misunderstood my point.

Peyton Manning has a 70% career win %
Tom Brady has a 77% career win %

this isn't a coincidence

these two under contract basically give their team a lock for a division championship

they should be paid accordingly

Tom, good guy or cheater, circumvent or legit contract, gives the Pats an unfair advantage by playing for Andy Dalton money.

It isn't fair to the rest of the NFL that has to pay their elite QB's elite QB money.

But I realize CP doesn't understand this because the majority of this website has the football IQ of BossChief's real life IQ ... so it's a lost point.
1. LOL at peyton manning being at the "top of his game"
2. So, it's okay to ask one guy to take a pay cut but not another. QB don't deserve to take less than market value, but defensive ends do. That seems awfully subjective, there.
3. Tom Brady - while a cheater - at least understands that paying your QB 20 million dollars a year cripples the franchise. Something Noodle Arm doesn't seem to grasp...
