In Townsend we have a real good one and I really don't want to **** with the guy who holds for a kicker on an absolute tear right now. I hope araiza finds a good gig somewhere. He deserves it. I just don't think this is worth it

Townsend hasn't been consistent. For every great punt...he's had a shit one.

Right?

And the guy's probably going to want $4-5 million to stay.

I've been saying we needed to let Townsend go for months. I have no interest in re-signing the guy. And this is a killer replacement who can probably be an upgrade with a little work with Toub. And he's going to be cheap for the foreseeable future.

And even if Townsend was Ray Guy-good (which he is not)… no punter is worth that amount.

He was maaaaaybe a top 10 punter this year? I mean Cole has proven to be a set and forget badass - the only real consistent elite punter the league's had in a bit. Dickson as well. The rest are almost always up and down.

Y'all remember Jack Fox? We had him in several years back to compete with Colquitt (or maybe even Townsend). Fox has been better than Townsend the last couple years.

And frankly the difference between the 5th best punter and the 25th best punter means pretty much dick.

This just makes so much sense. Because in the end even if Araiza is screwed up by the year off, there's gonna be some other vet minimum schlub that can go out there and be near enough to average to not make a difference.

And near enough to average was all Townsend was this year.

Let him go chase his record deal - I'm extremely happy it won't be here. That's essentially going to cover the cost of Tranquill returning and there's just nothing but good things to say about that.

Once we correct the receiver room, we will be back to not punting very much anyway. Tommy seemed surprised he actually had to earn those game checks this year lol.

I didn't realize he was a pretty decent placekicker in college as well. Not that he will replace Butker, but if we Butker gets hurt in game, he's much better than Reid. Tommy is good, but this guy could be great. We get a couple of WR's, we aren't going to punt much anyway though...

I mean, I wouldn't go that far about inconsistency though I agree he was more inconsistent this year. he's still one of the better punters in the league. And i can't help but wonder how much battling injuries all year might have something to do with that. We said the same about butker last season.

I care a lot more about the holding than the punting. And Townsend has finally got it down where araiza was trying to learn it. I dunno... Given the season butker had I don't want to mess with it

No he isn't.

Find me some numbers that support it. He was, at best, an average punter last season. Even stuff like Puntalytics has him barely in the top 20 and that's all they do.

Wanna say you're worried about the holding aspect of it? Aight - worry away, I guess. But as a punter, Townsend was nothing special. He has been a JAG most of his career with one notably good season in 2022.

Tommy seems to have a big but very inconsistent leg.

Not someone I want to pay. Sometimes he looks incredible, but he’s shanked plenty in his career. Can’t have that inconsistency.

Isn't that the same data that had him as the second best punter last season?

Probably.

And I believe in the bottom 1/3 the year before that. Which is precisely my point. There's never been the sort of AJ Cole level of consistency at the top of the league from him. And punters are a lot like relievers in that the very tip top is usually kinda stable (again, guys like Cole) whereas the rest of it is volatile.

He was below average in 2020 and 2021, slightly above average in 2023 (and 15th by their Punter EPA rating).

3/4 of the seasons he's been in the league, including his most recent one, he's been slightly below average to slightly above average. It's more likely that he's just an average punter than it is he's 'one of the best in the league'.

Townsend is going to get a pretty decent payday and Arazia is a better kicker. Dont overthink it.

They better be 200% sure he can hold. Justin Tucker kept his punter around for an eternity because he refused to change holders. Doesn't make me comfortable that he was learning to hold for a very short buffalo training camp.

Also, as of now we know the dude has an unreal leg. Still a lot to prove that he's a better all around punter. Touchback rate isn't great for a league and a team that will need a lot of shorter field punts. I mean I guess it's worth a shot to see how much he can flash in the next few months before you make a decision on Townsend. But I don't think we'll have nearly enough time to know what we have before we make that call on Townsend
