A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February.

It's unclear what has changed between then and now.

The reason it's a big deal is teams don't fire coaches 2 weeks before the season, it just doesn't make much sense.

If he didn't want him he should have said he wouldn't take the job if Gailey was forced on him, when past coaches had assistants forced on them people said they were pussies and idiots for taking that.

I guarantee you, it goes a lot deeper than that.

Clark Hunt was on the hook for $1 million dollars plus to Chan Gailey. I'm positive that there were discussions with both Haley & Pioli about their ability and willingness to work with Gailey. Haley was likely asked to at least give it a go with Gailey, for the sake of Hunt's pocketbook but was also likely to have the option of final say.

Haley gave it a go and it wasn't working for him. End of story.

What people on the internet say about him is irrelevant. Pretty much nobody is going to be able to dictate to an NFL team the particulars of the job, unless you're a veteran coach with a track record.

I'd say the fact that Gailey just got fired may be an indication that he might not have been forced on Haley to start with.

Because he ultimately got him out, however late it might be.

At least Pioli and Hunt were amendable to the possibility of doing anything to help their HC be successful.
