Long article, but it's interesting to see the statistical comparison. It's a shame the game has become so conservative. It'd be awesome to see defense get to play the game, more big plays, more turnovers, etc.

There are some who think rolling back on the equipment would stop players from treating their helmets as missiles. It's an interesting theory that less equipment could improve the safety of the game.

If I'm going to quote anything for mother****ing TRUTH, it's the below. I'd rather live with field goals than the entire league running through 32 guys. I'd rather watch a game that can be won multiple ways than one without FGs.

I definitely agree that the NFL style of football is becoming robotic and bland. IMO, a big reason why college football has been steadily growing in popularity is because of the contrasts in styles between teams. You have the Big 12 and their love affair with the Air Raid, Georgia Tech's triple option, Boise State's unique take on the pro-style offense, Ohio State and Oregon's spread, Michigan State and Stanford's old-school smashmouth style, etc. all in the same sport. You don't really get that kind of variety in the NFL.

A 98 year old close family member is dying, probably today.

He played leather cap football in his day. He was good enough that he was recruited to go to high school before it was common, and then recruited to go another year after he was to graduate, specifically to play football in the early 30's. He didn't do that so that he could go work the family farm with his brothers. He was fast and from the stories could have gone on to play if he had wanted to do it.

He had teeth knocked out 3 times playing football and described it as a fist fight while you ran the ball. The lack of rules and enforcement must have made it quite the sight to see as a spectator.

Wish he still had his helmet but I'm pretty sure he doesn't.
