Chiefs fire Chan

Source: Chiefs chop Chan Gailey
Posted by Mike Florio on August 31, 2009 11:04 AM ET
A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February.

It's unclear what has changed between then and now.

More to come.

*crosses fingers* hoping for the best.
Someone from the past regime got fired in the preseason. Why the hell is this a concern?

Haley was probably changing the calls as Gailey called them in. Gailey wouldn't be none to happy about that. If you don't like it git the **** out/Haley.

This isn't surprising at all. If anything, I figured it would happen earlier.

Haley's been quoted as saying that he didn't know who would be calling the plays this year. It could be Gailey, Mo Carthon or Haley himself. That pretty much tells me that he just wasn't familiar enough with Gailey as a coach, play-caller and person to be able to make a determination.

Now that he's watched Gailey call plays in three games, he decides to relieve him of that duty. Gailey's "style" isn't meshing with Haley's vision for the Chiefs. I think it's that simple.

In a way, I'm glad because unless coaches have worked together in the past, inheriting another regime's coaches usually doesn't work. And this is a prime example.

There can be no excuses now.

Bottom line is it's Haley's responsibilty to put the team in the best position to win, if Chan's the OC for the worst offense ever it still comes back to Haley. He has to try and do what he thinks is the best move for the team.

I'll worry about that once the season starts going along.

I think some of you are way too worried about Haley's reputation.

I think Haley is exactly what this team needs after the Gunther/Vermiel/Herm era. If the players are that soft mentally, then let them go after this year and bring in new ones. Blow the whole damn team up if necessary.

I want players who do what they're supposed to when they're supposed to. Talent is great, but precision and technique covers a lot of territory also. If they don't like being told what to do, then the hell with them. If their "feelings" get hurt, then let them earn a living doing a real job instead of playing a game.

Not much sympathy here.

Crap, if I had to do it, I'd bring in a bunch of Paris Island DI's to run training camp.

Let's hope this is all about Haley "seeing things" in defenses that Gailey was not seeing (and should have) - and resulting in the wrong plays being called.

I know it's a stretch....but at this point, I need any nugget of positive outlook with these chiefs that I can get.

Who cares? They aren't our coach. Those guys were overwhelmed... Crennel never had it. Mangini did, but then wrecked it when he got desperate and brought Favre in.

Either way, neither one of those guys are the coach. And I don't disagree, a lot of the Pats assistants have struggled. But we don't have a Pats assistant as a coach. Mangini, Crennel, Weis, and now McDaniels have struggled. But in terms of front office philosophy, the Pats, Dolphins, and Falcons have done very well. We'll see.

The defense is improved and the quarterback is in place. Baby steps.

I get the impression that most of the players on our roster like playing for Haley. Maybe not all, but most.
