#2 Wide Receiver 2016-17
I still see #2 WR as a big hole. So, who do you guys want as our #2 next year?
Develop from within? I'm not confident that Wilson, nor Conley is our #2 next year. Draft "The Guy"? I've read there are a lot of options in the draft again this year, but rookie WRs are mostly unreliable. Vet FA? Several FAs coming up, but not sure who will get away from their current team: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/wide-receiver/ |

We need to go 4 deep at WR and CB.
legit deep, not crap. every other position has a legit backup, why not WR and CB? several teams have guys at 4 or 5 that could challenge for our #2 wr spot.

Would I like to have 5 Maclins on the team? Sure. Am I willing to expend substantial draft capital and/or cap space to acquire one? No, not when we have at least one dire need on the OL and no depth to speak of at CB. Now again, FA could change a lot of that - namely if we're able to bring back Smith and/or Howard. But right now, I see us keeping only one of those guys (at best) and if that's the case, we'll need to use those resources on more pressing spots. Besides, WR has become a place where you can find a shitload of value in the middle rounds. Guys like Moncreif and Brown fall into the 3rd pretty much every season. This year it was Crowder and Diggs in the 4th and 5th. There will be guys next year as well (even a Ty Montgomery or Justin Hardy would do nicely). It's just not a good use of scarce resources to throw a high pick at a player who's likely the 3rd option in the offense, at best (more likely the 4th option).

I think the offensive line needs to be upgraded as well, but I'm with you defensively but somethings have to be developed from within. Just like our dl depth gas been, some of these young corners, ilbs, etc are gonna have to develop into replacements |

I'm talking about the guys like you mentioned. we need to draft guys like Montcrief etc. instead of Avant,Hammond etc. Maybe Dorsey will get there eventually. He seems to love safeties.

Maclin, Wilson, Conley, and... uhm... DAT... going into 2016.
I think the Chiefs just may burn a draft pick on a WR.. 3rd-5th rd guy. Of course, they could also add a mid-tier vet instead.. maybe Andy just can't let go and brings Avant back to play till he's 50? ![]()

But in 2 years he's turned the WR corps over from being the worst unit I've ever seen (in any position group) to being solid, if unspectacular. To go from Bowe, Moeaki and a bunch of chaff to Maclin, Kelce and then a couple of nice developmental guys in Wilson and Conley (who, if nothing else, would be plucked off waivers the instant we released them) shows that he recognizes the need and has been trying to turn the ship. He just started with absolutely nothing. One more nice draft pick (a Hardy type, IMO) along with continued development from Wilson and Conley should be enough to have us in pretty nice shape.

Albert Wilson is a second year player from a small school who is just starting to show that he belongs in the league. Replacing him should not be a priority at all. We have much larger needs. Drafting should always be about best player available, so if a steal falls to us, great. Short of that, we still need a corner, a MLB, and fatties on both sides of the ball.

Absolutely. In fact, I would say that's his best fit long-term. I don't think he's quite big enough to be a 4-3 MLB or athletic enough to play outside in a 3-4. I guess I could see him as a SLB in a 4-3 but he doesn't really have a pass-rush set and in the modern NFL I think you'd really like to see both the Will and the Sam able to rush the passer even in a 4-3.
Yeah, as far as I can see, ILB in a 3-4 is the only good long-term home for Brothers.

Brothers played mostly weakside this year and he flourished because he's an above average athlete, especially for a linebacker. But really, DJ could have damn near played safety coming out of college. If I'm thinking of comparables, Jaylon Smith is DJ and really Brothers is closer to someone like Ramik Wilson (at least physically). Brothers has more of a nose for the ball than Wilson and will be more likely to take on blockers and/or challenge at the point of attack. But I don't expect he'll ever be the kind of 3-down terror that DJ is. Derrick Johnson's greatness has been criminally understated throughout the NFL. That guy does the kind of stuff that we won't see again in KC for a very long time. Brothers will end up a quality player at the next level, but if you're expecting him to 'replace' DJ, you're asking too much.
