McDaniels vs Herm: Who was worse for their team?

Simple question, but I think the realization of my own take on it was somewhat surprising when I thought of it. Just curious to know how the masses feel.

Herm was good for the Chiefs in the long run
going young - cutting deadwood - 1 pretty good draft

My guess is that this poll will be a landslide, but I guess I'd just never thought about it until now. Even though we all despise Herm, he came into the team in a really rough position and, though we didn't make much progress, he didn't really "hurt" the team so much as delay its development. We also pulled a handful of decent players out of his tenure, though one could argue we had our fair share of clunkers as well.

McDaniels, on the other hand, came into the team when it was really in pretty decent shape. But in two years, he managed to pretty much dismantle all of the strengths the team had and waste numerous draft picks in the process. It's really pretty impressive when you think about it.

In some ways, it's just oddly comforting to realize that, no matter how bad Herm was, the Broncos had it worse.

I don't despise Herm. In fact, I think all this Herm hate is overblown, kind of like a mob mentality that sheeple follow. He was the easy scapegoat. Do I think he was a good/above avg. coach? No, but there have been MANY much worse coaches in the NFL. At least he got his teams to the playoffs in NY and KC. He did a good job of finding and developing talent, which the Chiefs are benefiting from today.

That's another thing I have an issue with, "backing into the playoffs." It's a 16 game schedule. The Chiefs played those teams on their schedule, as did the rest of the NFL. Nobody "gave" it to them. They were fortunate yes, but what teams don't have good luck and bad luck, a bad/good call here or there that determined a game? 16 games is 16 games, it just happened to be the last day when it was determined.

"Fortunate" you don't want to have to depend on that term at the end of the yr. If you do then that means more often than not you will not go far into the playoffs. I get your point but Herm had that team going in the wrong direction by the end of that season.

Her m was just a bad coach. McDaniels got rid of every piece of the puzzle that made them a winner and then got caught cheating. His drafts were hilarity. Herm could draft. McDaniels will be the runaway winner in this poll. God I wish they hadn't fired him.

McDaniels got rid of the good players that Shanahan had.

Herm didn't do that to Vermeil's players in his first offseason. On top of that, he made the playoffs, even though he had the talent Vermeil formed. But hey, McDaniels decided to dish out Shanahan's talented players rather than trying to make the playoffs.

McDaniels gets the vote for this poll.

Squirmin' Herman at least drafted a few good players. McEmbryo, IMO, might turn out to be a solid coach eventually but, in the short term, he dumped the Broncos' good players and coaches and left them holding a bag of flaming shit.

Herm Edwards tore down a team and built a foundation of talent through the draft. A foundation he had no clue how to coach, mentor, lead, or motivate.

McDaniels tore down a foundation, traded it away, attempted to rebuild a team, and managed to build a dangerous passing game.

The mess that Herm left (undercoached and undeveloped talent) is much less than the mess that McD left (overall lack of talent.)

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Exactly. The Chiefs organization did a lot of the things that they needed to do, rebuilding wise, with Herm as head coach. His drafts are the preeminent reason why the Chiefs are where they are now. He was just an atrocious in-game coach is all.

As a Chiefs fan, I hated Herm Edwards and I cheered when he was fired.

If I were a Broncos fan, I think I'd want to hunt down Josh McDaniels and cut him into tiny pieces. It's going to take them many years to recover from the McDaniels train wreck.
