What Are Your Thoughts On Motion?
My question to you fine people of ChiefsPlanet is this:
Do you think that offensive motion in football (not to be confused with shifts) is advantageous or merely a waste of time and effort? |

I don't mind it. I would imagine that it increases the effectiveness of pick routes and makes it easier to flood zones, but surely it comes with an increase in procedure penalties. However, this has not been verified with any data, just a hunch.

I always thought one of the advantages of using motion was to help identify the defense pre-snap.

Ask Sorter. He knows more football than just about anyone on the board.
One thing it does is reveal zone vs man. Giving the D more to think about and prepare for is advantageous to the offense, as long as they are well prepared in their system. On a player level, it would seem to depend a lot on match ups. A WR with a really good move off the line might be best from a still start, where a long strider might benefit from motion. DBs factor into match ups as well. |

It's a presnap version of play action, in my layman's opinion. Same advantages, same disadvantages.

It is ****ing a beautiful thing to watch a TE go in motion and change the strong side of the offense then you see a backer take two steps to go over the TE and the MLB shift to a game and maybe the other backer slide in or out. Football man. All the feels.

Motion worked out for Manning pretty well.

Yes it did, and not because of the motion, but what he saw, or didn't see, the defense react to the motion.

I always kind of thought that all the effort Vermeil and Saunders put into getting their clockwork offense to run the right pre-snap motions was kind of a waste. That offense was so efficient, effective, and confusing as it was that it didn't really need the motion aspect.
