Best Radar Detectors?

Okay, so I recently got a newer car. Faster than my old one.

I am somewhat of an aggressive driver, and I tend to "massage" the speed limit. I figure one bad ticket is the same price as a good radar detector. If I avoid one ticket because of this thing, then it has paid for itself. If I avoid two, then it was definitely worth it.

Do any of you have one? Are you happy with yours? Are they worth a damn?

Every site I try and find research on is some bullshit "Add to your cart" website that is trying to sell me one. I want answers, damnit. And I want them now!

Thanks.

This

Through the years I've had a heavy foot. I heard an ex-cop (I think he was in the KC area?) say, "the cops will give you 5 miles over but at 7 they will stop you." I set my cruise at 5 over and so far no problem.

I received a Cobra as a gift. But, I don't use mine so I can speed, but for those time when I turn off an interstate onto a state/county/city road that is 35 mph. If I'm not careful, I'll be back up to 70 without knowing it. Yeah, I know I should be more attentive, but when that thing squaks cuz of a groc. store, I quickly lift my foot.

velocitation will get you every time when getting off an interstate to a 35MPH to 50MPH zone.

A radar detector will probably do you more harm than good if you rely on it. I have one from a gift and use it only because its interesting to see how often I get lasered even when I'm not speeding more than a couple mph. You'll get a false sense of security and get nailed by insta-lasers, when you really should have been not speeding in the first place.

If your going to be an impatient dangerous fool come hell or high water, then I guess you may as well get one, you might get lucky. Really though, you should keep it to 5 over at the most and save your money. Speeding will get you tickets, fines, high insurance rates, higher likelihood of getting into an accident, all for what? Getting somewhere 1 minute quicker and some kind of satisfaction from fantasizing about being an indy 500 speed racer slaloming through the lanes?

Probably one of my most enjoyable moments on the road was when some idiot on the freeway in a red sports car zoomed by me, turning into my lane in front barely missing me by less than a foot and off into the distance. 10 minutes later, I drove past his wreck and even though I felt evil for doing it, I couldnt keep from laughing.

Ok, i had a long response to this but it didn't get published thanks to server failure. In a nutshell, most detectors/scramblers are shit. The only one's worth a crap are $$$expensive$$$. our shop is sponsored by Beltronics, and they sent us the most expensive unit they make, admitting to us that it's the only unit that will surely work across the 48 states. It uses 4 scramblers, 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. It Retails for around $1,200, but i can assure you that it works. we drove one of our cars across country with it and saved us multiple times.

Anywho...Check out Beltronics.

As I said above, mine was a gift as well. I most likely would not have purchased one. I, also, like the novelty of seeing what's happening along the route … where the cops are (guess I’ve speeded too much in my life cuz I automatically tap the breaks when that thing seriously goes off - even if I’m driving under the speed limit. ) … and when a cop passes and it doesn’t go off.

“Getting somewhere 1 minute quicker…” I fully agree with you on short trips. Kinda like the story of the American was rushing the Japanese to catch a train. He asked, “how long until the next train … 3 minutes and the Japanese asked, if we catch the first train, just how will we spend those 3 minutes that is so urgent?” But, on one of those 8 to 10 hour gigs, 5 miles an hour allows you to get out of that vehicle much sooner and stretch your legs.

“Red sports car” … well, I wouldn’t laugh if he/she (one thing I’ve noticed since returning from being overseas for years is that when it comes to ladies & sports cars … well, let’s but it this way … the guys ain’t the only ones… ) wrecked cause someone couldn’t gotten hurt, but I really do get a kick out of toping a hill and seeing the blue popcorn lights twinkling … especially, if there was traffic in front of you and he/she was impatient to get around you.

I haven't used mine in 4 years because Johnny Law knows how to out smart them.

I was doing 85 in a 70 when I noticed a Ford Taurus creeping up on me. I figured I'd let him pass me and he could find the speed traps up ahead. Instantly, the radar went off and his blue and reds were flashing. He paced me before he turned the radar on. He also let me know that he was pacing me because he detected that I had radar in the vehicle.

Well, he must've felt bad for drawing his gun on us and just gave us a warning.
