But there's another part of the equation that's often overlooked in these conversations. The second you pull that gun, you have to be willing to possibly end another human's life...I don't know how many people have that in them. I wish there were more people keeping loaded weapons handy as well, but it's a concern when there are small children in the house. I suppose teaching them early would help, but you hear in news all the time about kids getting their hands on LEGAL weapons and making a mistake. It would really be a hard call as a parent...safety vs. children curiosity.

I cold be wrong but I believe that most parents (and people as a whole) are very protective of their children. Based upon that, I believe a parent would do anything in their power to protect their children and they wouldn't think twice about taking an action against a threat if given the opportunity.

Disclaimer: I'm not a parent but am curious as to how you protect your family in cases like this.

Thais kind of crime won't make him a target in prison. Well, everyone in there is a target on some level, but this won't make him stand out too much. Most prisons are full of guys that did stuff this bad or worse.

I've got a bat next to my nightstand and a gun in the drawer of the nightstand. No kids, so no worries about the gun yet. I hope to God I never have to use either but if I had the choice, bat would be my preference....but the gun would be used if needed.

Would you be more accurate with a bat or a gun in the dark? Also depends on if the intruder is armed as well.

I think if you're gonna fight you damn well better go in with your most powerful weapon. If nothing else at least the sound of rounds firing will most likely scare them off.
