But there's another part of the equation that's often overlooked in these conversations. The second you pull that gun, you have to be willing to possibly end another human's life...I don't know how many people have that in them. And if you pull it...and you suddenly realize you don't have it in you...you're going to find yourself in an imminently more dangerous situation than you already were in.
I wish to god there were more people out there keeping loaded weapons handy and were blowing away people who were committing heinous acts like this, because I do believe it would act as a damn good deterrent. But the sad truth is, for most people, there is no way to defend yourself from such an incident.

I wish there were more people keeping loaded weapons handy as well, but it's a concern when there are small children in the house. I suppose teaching them early would help, but you hear in news all the time about kids getting their hands on LEGAL weapons and making a mistake. It would really be a hard call as a parent...safety vs. children curiosity.
I cold be wrong but I believe that most parents (and people as a whole) are very protective of their children. Based upon that, I believe a parent would do anything in their power to protect their children and they wouldn't think twice about taking an action against a threat if given the opportunity.
Disclaimer: I'm not a parent but am curious as to how you protect your family in cases like this.
