Schefter reporting Cowher tops our list of candidates, Shanahan will NOT be in KC..

Shanahan isn’t a candidate in Kansas City
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/01/23/shan...n-kansas-city/

Despite reports running rampant that Kansas City is negotiating with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan they are not, sources said Friday.

The Chiefs never have made any contact with Shahanan, never. And there have been no contract negotiations.

So unless people I have known for years are wrong, Shanahan is not going to be the next coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/01/23/shan...n-kansas-city/

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/01/23/cowh...fs-candidates/

While football has speculated on the Chiefs coaching search the past few weeks, now Kansas City actually gets to commence it.

One NFL source said a name near or at the top of the Chiefs list is former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who has been adamant that he will not coach this season. Still, the source said the Chiefs are interested in Cowher, though it is uncertain whether they would be able to entice him to come out of retirement.

Also on the Chiefs list is Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who used to work on the staff of Bill Parcells, the father-in-law of Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli. If the Chiefs wanted to hire Haley, they would have to wait until after the Super Bowl to make the move.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni also is thought to be on the Chiefs list of potential candidates. Pasqualoni had a down season in Miami, but is highly respected around the league and used to work with Pioli for two seasons at Syracuse.

Some around the league believe that Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt has a strong feeling for Kansas City offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, though Pioli would have to sign off on the hire and some doubt that he would.

However it works, the coaching carousel keeps spinning.

And we now have 11 teams that have changed head coaches, more than any other season in NFL history. The changes included two Super-Bowl winning coaches that were fired, two Super-Bowl winning coaches that retired, and seven other changes.

Is It Shanny?
January 23, 2009 - Bob Gretz |

You gotta love this.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Chiefs are in final stages of negotiations with former Denver head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards as head coach. Mortensen said Friday evening on Sports Center that the negotiations have started up between the team and Shanahan in the last 24 hours.

But ESPN.com’s story on the matter filed after the TV report puts a slightly different spin on the situation. The story has reporting from Mortensen, but was not written by him says:

“Once source claims there have been negotiations with Shanahan and that a deal was near but another said Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has targeted Shanahan without a clear-cut result.”

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network and a guy who jumped to the league outlet after covering the Broncos in Denver, reports that there have been no negotiations between Shanahan and the Chiefs.

Here’s what Schefter posted on NFL.com:

“Despite rampant reports that the Chiefs are negotiating with former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards, they are not, sources said Friday. The Chiefs never have made any contact with Shanahan — never. And there have been no contract negotiations.

“So unless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan will not be the next coach of the Chiefs. It’s not happening. People can keep talking as if it is, but it’s not. Shanahan will not be the coach of the Chiefs in 2009.”

Shanahan spoke to former Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham from a golf course in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico on Thursday.

The Chiefs had nothing to say Friday afternoon on a replacement for Edwards.

So, this will be interesting to see which one of the big-time NFL information guys has it right, and which one has it wrong.

No.....Bowlen took care of that.

Bill Cowher is NOT coaching the Chiefs. Unless the Chiefs can seemingly talk him out of retirement somehow, or someway convince him to coach here I don't see it as a possibility.

He already said himself he is not returning to the sidelines this year.

So for weeks not even a rumor coming out. Now that Herm is fired the rumors come out of the woodworks. Pioli is a guy that keeps his cards close to his vest. Whatever the decision is, we won't know about it beforehand unless an agent for a prospective coach leaks the news.
