Well, I've gone and done it. I now have a dog.

I've joined the ranks of pet owners. This is my first go around with a dog. My parents have had a bunch of dogs, but this is the first one by myself.

Mrs. Buehler445 is a dog fanatic and has been bugging me to get one since the dawn of time. She watches all the Animal Planet shows about dogs, so we finally got one.

Feel free to share any tips or training advice, since I'm a relative n00b.

Oh, and I couldn't help myself. I had to call him "Chief".

What the ****?

Dogs are AWESOME. Let him/her live inside with you and wife. Let him/her sleep with you and BOND with you. Make your dog a FAMILY MEMBER.

I have two 80 pound female labs that I walk at least four days a week, 3.5 miles (hills) per day. Some weeks, it's as often as six days a week.

It's difficult: We have a 22 month old and three businesses to sustain. But our poochies are our family, so we do our best by them.

Our Labs sleep with us, hang out with us, travel with us (when possible) and are just as vital to us as any human.

They're FAMILY.

I couldn't even IMAGINE living without them, let alone put them in the garage or outside.
I COMPLETELY agree. I grew up on a farm, dog were outdoor pets, plain and simple. My girlfriend wanted one so I caved, but I would NEVER have an indoor dog right. Well, I caved again, and I'm glad I did.

I'm now of the opinion that if your dog does not live inside with you, and is not a part of the family, there is no reason to have a dog

My older brother, who build himself a house in the country back home, and has 5 boys, has two pet dogs. Both live outside, and really aren't there for any reason but to feed. Sure the kids were excited to get a dog, but after the "new" wore off, they don't pay a lick of attention to them.

He and his wife kind of look down on the fact that we have a dog in the house(a great dane/weimereiner mix). The only way they'd consider it is if it were a small dog, like a weiner dog(which I'd probably hate, I don't like small yippee dogs, give me a mans dog). I've tried to explain to them the incredible bond you can share with a pet if it is welcomed into your home and family, but they don't get it, not yet anyway.

Good looking pup there. I've got an Australian Cattle/Blue Heeler mix. Everything everyone said is true- they are very smart dogs and they need tons of exercise. I walk mine at least 3 times/day and get it to the dog park at least 3 times/week.

When we were in Colorado, I took him hiking with me. Now that I'm in Florida, I take him to the dog beach and we play fetch all day.

It is a lot of work being a dog owner of a herding breed, but it is totally worth it. Totally.
