Well, I've gone and done it. I now have a dog.

I've joined the ranks of pet owners. This is my first go around with a dog. My parents have had a bunch of dogs, but this is the first one by myself.

Mrs. Buehler445 is a dog fanatic and has been bugging me to get one since the dawn of time. She watches all the Animal Planet shows about dogs, so we finally got one.

Feel free to share any tips or training advice, since I'm a relative n00b.

Oh, and I couldn't help myself. I had to call him "Chief".

first off, congrats on the new puppy. keep him tired, and get him to the farm as often as possible. that breed loves to herd and will find jobs while being your constant companion. btw, i named my dog chief too. i had a 3 or 4 female names picked out, but ended up with a male. chief was the first thing that came to mind...

Great pickup, if you have to get a dog, get one thats easy to feed, fiercely loyal & smart... that dog looks like a mixed Jack Russell, great find.

Thats why i'm a dog guy... a good dog will Dance with Hell for you if some weirdo is trying to get in @ 3 am... cats? though i love them to, they will do nothing more than look on as you are murdered in your sleep.

Utility, value, unconditional love... gotta be a dog.

Either I missed something or I just don't get it.

You got a dog, but you're going to keep him/her outside or in the garage?

What the ****?

Dogs are AWESOME. Let him/her live inside with you and wife. Let him/her sleep with you and BOND with you. Make your dog a FAMILY MEMBER.

I have two 80 pound female labs that I walk at least four days a week, 3.5 miles (hills) per day. Some weeks, it's as often as six days a week.

It's difficult: We have a 22 month old and three businesses to sustain. But our poochies are our family, so we do our best by them.

Our Labs sleep with us, hang out with us, travel with us (when possible) and are just as vital to us as any human.

They're FAMILY.

I couldn't even IMAGINE living without them, let alone put them in the garage or outside.

Dane, I know where you're coming from, I really do. But it just doesn't work out in my case. Most dogs in this part of the world live outside. The first problem is that I have really bad allergies and that pretty much prohibits me being in an environment with significant dander exposure. Also, I grew up on a farm. All our dogs lived outside. It's just the nature of the relationship.

Don't worry about Chief. He's already part of the family. We spend plenty of time with him, and my wife will ensure he's comfortable (She spends plenty of money on him). Plus, there are times when I'll be able to take him to the farm with me all day, that is an opportunity most dogs don't get. Don't worry about Chief. There is no way I could do anything to adversely affect the dog.

That's cool Man, and I'm not trying to be a dick. But since my wife and I got our first Lab in December 2003, I've become a fierce defender of the human-dog relationship. I never had any dogs growing up and never "got it". Now, I seriously couldn't live without either of my girls. They want to be with us 24-7 and we want to be with them 24-7. When they're not here (I take them for grooming every 2-3 weeks. They get bathed, nails, ears, etc. for only $23 dollars!), the house feels empty.

As for the allergies, I'm slightly allergic as well. My allergist suggested rinsing them at least once a week and shampooing every other week. It's worked like a charm.

Best of luck with Chief and enjoy!

Great attitude!

We feel the same about ours ... they are part of the family; loyal, protective and each is unique inh some way.

Our latest was an abused dog that my daughter rescued. It was a year before the dog forgot all the bad crap that happened to him and he now runs, plays and acts like the other dogs, responds to whistle and verbal "commands", and comes running with his tail wagging - a real great feeling.
